Foils Bleeding Or Slipping? Try These Hacks!
Ask A BTC Expert: Foil Mistakes + Solutions With @omgartistry
Are you foiling with confidence or wasting time fixing bleeds and slips?! Here’s how to pick up the pace: Understand WHY mistakes happen and learn how to avoid them. Start with these fast foil hacks from Olivia Smalley (@omgartistry) and watch this online class for 90 minutes of her BEST blonding education.
1. Mixing lightener in a rush? Avoid this mistake!
Let’s get back to basics. Remember, developer has oxygen inside of it. The higher the developer = the more oxygen! When you mix lightener too quickly, you’re actually adding even MORE oxygen. This will cause the lightener to expand as it processes and ultimately bleed in the foil.
Do THIS instead: Olivia gently stirs Joico Blonde Life Lightening Powder to the consistency of toothpaste to avoid runny, bleeding foils!

2. Prevent foils and hair color from overlapping.
Picture this: You’re applying color between foils and run into a sticky situation—the formulas bleed into each other! Here’s how to avoid this.
- Work in tight sections around the head
- Take into consideration the curvature of the head
- If the head is wide, take a wider section
- If the head is small and more rounded, take a smaller section around the Mohawk area
- Always lock the foils directly at the root

3. Clients with fine hair? Avoid slipping foils.
Say it with us: Toothpaste-like consistency and saturate the ends! If a client has fine hair, you have less hair to foil. Here’s Olivia’s go-to hack: Apply lightener to the regrowth ONLY. Then, apply Joico Defy Damage ProSeries 2: Bond Strengthening Color Treatment on the remaining hair through the ends to help secure and stick that area.
4. Are blonde clients not coming back? Pricing transparency is KEY.
The No.1 way to keep blondes in your chair is simple: Manage expectations and be upfront about necessary steps and how much it will cost them. Read Olivia’s fast pricing breakdown below and learn her best blonding business tips on BTC University.
Olivia bases her foil pricing structure on how much she wants to make hourly. For example, let’s say you charge $100/hour and a client’s desired blonde will take 9 total hours to accomplish.
- Hourly rate: $100 x 9 total hours = $900 service
- Be transparent: “This will take me 9 hours at least.”
- This does not necessarily mean you have to do all 9 hours in one service.
- Create a game plan, like breaking up the service into three separate appointments for three hours each.
- This will set a realistic expectation for the cost of the overall look and what each appointment will look like.
