OMG Transformation: Correcting Color + Cut With Extensions

close formula

What would you do if this client sat in your chair? And can you BELIEVE this before-and-after?! Here’s what happened: she’s a hair model that attempted to remove an icy blue hue on her own—and melted her hair off. Hairtalk Artistic Director Vicki Casciola knew she could give this model back her length, desired color…and confidence! Check out this transformation we spotted at the 2018 International Salon & Spa Expo!

“When she came in, she was very insecure and wouldn’t look me in the eye,” Vicki said about her model. “When she left, she was taking selfies.” Vicki demonstrated how extensions can be used to correct a chemical cut while keeping the integrity of the hair. Here’s how she did it.

Selecting and Matching Extension Colors

Vicki used a combination of four colors on this look: 60A and 613, which are two blonde shades, and then two rooty/colormelt shades: 8/25CM and 25/4R.

  • For each sandwich, use a solid blonde on the bottom of the sandwich and a rooty shade on the top. This adds brightness to the ends but maintains the existing rooty look.
  • To color match for extensions, use the mids and ends. Be sure to match not only hair level, but hair tone.

Installation Process

Watch Vicki install Hairtalk Mini Strands in the fringe area.

1. Use Original and Original Plus extensions on the back of the head until one row above the ear. (Click HERE to learn how to apply Hairtalk extensions!)

  • Original Plus create an even more seamless look because the hair is inserted into the tape, creating the illusion that the hair is growing directly from the scalp.
  • Placing Original Plus extensions on the top of each sandwich (with Original below) allowed Vicki to go high up the head without detection.

2. Switch to Petite and Petite Plus from one row above the ear to the top of the head.

  • Using Petite Plus again allowed Vicki to work high on the head without the tape-ins being visible.

3. Bulk up the fringe area with Mini Strands and Mini Strands Plus.

  • Designed to lay completely invisible, the 0.4-inch wide tab of the Mini Strand is super thin.
