4 Curly Styling Takeaways:

1. Saturation is key: Applying product to wet hair—meaning, sopping wet hair, is key to even product distribution. Even if your client just showered or left the bowl in the salon, Christin explains, “The moment you get out of the shower, your hair is already starting to dry. That’s why I re-saturate wet hair with a spray bottle before applying product.”

Pro Tip: Educate your clients as you style. Instruct them to try applying product while still in the shower if they want to skip the spray bottle step.

2. Choose products with slip: “Curly clients need slippery types of products/stylers,” Christin explains. That’s why her product of choice is OLAPLEX No.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum. “This gives us a slip and makes the detangling process easier, especially if you have someone with a tender scalp. Navigation through the head is so much better,” she adds. “This is definitely one my favorite products of all time.”

3. Use your hands as your main tools: Hands provide a more gentle and controlled detangling process. “When we use tools, we tend to over-separate the curls and we lose the clumping effect, those happy curls that literally chunk together,” Christin says.

4. The squish test: When you’re finished applying product, allow the hair to gather in your hands and squish: You should hear it! “If it doesn’t make that squishy sound, you probably don’t have enough water in the hair,” Christin explains.
