A Great Stylist…

1. Listens To Their Clients

Are you truly listening to your clients during the consultation or is it in one ear and out the other? Are you offering them helpful solutions to their hair concerns and customizing their salon experience to fit their needs? Don’t just force unneeded products and services on your patrons to make a quick buck. Be their hair advocate and they’ll be loyal to you!

2. Values Healthy Tresses

There are times when you need to put your foot down to protect your clients’ hair. Are you intimately familiar with the word ‘NO’ or do you give your clients whatever they want regardless of the consequences? It’s not worth it if you’ll instantly lose their trust once their hair starts falling out. Make hair trims and treatments mandatory so anyone in your chair knows that you care about their hair.

3. Eats, Sleeps And Breathes Hair

Are you keeping up to date with the latest in education or have you not taken a class since you left hair school? Do attend hair shows to see what your peers and industry leaders are up to? If you’re not passionate about your work it will show up in your craft. Client’s can tell if you’re genuinely excited about all things HAIR or just going through the motions.

4. Is Consistent

The worst thing you can do is to start taking your regulars for granted. Do they feel pampered when they come to you? Do you treat every visit like it’s their first? Are they satisfied every time they leave the salon? Is their color ready and waiting when they walk through those doors? Nothing kills a relationship faster than not being heard or valued.

5. Is Open To Critique

Gina stresses that the most important quality a great stylist should have is the ability to accept criticism. How do you react when a client points out something they don’t like? Every good relationship needs trust and your clients should be able to come to you with everything.

“During my consultations when I was behind the chair, this was my dialogue to every new guest,” shares Gina. “‘Sally, I know we just met, but I want you to know my priority is that you are 100% happy. I take nothing personally and if you ever need anything before your appointment please call me so I can make it right! You deserve to be happy from the time you leave until the time you come back!'”
