Tutorial: How To Cut A Texturized Bob
It’s one of your most-requested haircuts, so tell us: Are your bobs looking soft and texturized or choppy and flippin’ out? This tutorial from Moroccanoil® Artist Zack Glaze (@hairbyzack) will have you cutting a “filtered bob” like a pro. Keep scrolling for a few of our fave tips!

1. Don’t make this common perimeter-cutting mistake.
There are a few key factors that can ruin the perimeter of a bob: Too much tension, elevation and overdirection. This will create unwanted graduation when the goal is a blunt line. That’s why Zack cuts the perimeter at natural fall.
Do this instead!
Follow these simple steps that will guide you through cutting the perimeter on wet hair, before texturizing on dry hair.
- Starting on wet hair, Zack preps with 1 to 2 pumps of Moroccanoil® Treatment Light and Moroccanoil® All In One Leave-In Conditioner as a cutting lotion.
- Section the hair into quadrants. Starting in the back, take diagonal-forward subsections and point-cut with zero elevation and no tension (at the hair’s natural fall.)
- Point-cut toward the middle on both sides to create consistency throughout the haircut.
- Repeat the same technique and head position when cutting the sides. The only adjustment is overdirecting toward the back to create slight elevation going forward. Otherwise, if the goal in a one-length cut, continue with natural fall.
The dreaded flippy ends can be avoided if her head is positioned properly. Tilt the client’s head forward when cutting, says Zack. If her head position is straight up and you cut the perimeter at natural fall, you’ll create a bend toward the ends—and when she later tilts her head forward, the length will fall over the line and cause those unwanted flip-outs.
3. Texturize & remove bulk on dry hair.
Before texturizing, Zack blow-dries the hair with Moroccanoil® Volumizing Mist and a Moroccanoil® Ceramic 45mm Round Brush to create volume at the roots. Next, he uses his go-to filtered bob technique for creating texture, removing bulk and maintaining length.
Sectioning:
Use the same sectioning as the wet haircut: Quadrants and diagonal-forward subsections.
Technique:
Use texturizing shears at an angle—open, close, repeat—to create texturized layers in the hair. Instead of doing a blunt line, working at an angle will create a different type of texture that moves from shorter to longer and maintains length.
Cutting The Sides:
On the sides, adjust the technique: Take radial sections at 90 degrees and do the same texturizing method. The elevation will create shorter pieces that push up and create volume.
Pro Tip: If you call the shear “ texturizers” versus thinning shears, apprehensive clients will feel more comfortable.
