3 Techniques To Master The Modern Bob

What trend is approved by celebs, Instagram models and everyday clients alike? The bob haircut. But let’s make this clear—it’s not your mother’s and def not your grandmother’s bob (sorry, moms!). The modern bob is either blunt or soft, textured or precise, but never boring. So we’re sharing the info you need to slay this cut.

Keep scrollin’ for three cutting techniques, bonus tips for blondes and different hair types, plus Insta-favorite bobs from BTC Team Member Chris Jones (@chrisjones_hair)

1. How To Achieve Blunt Lines + Soft Edges

How do you create blunt lines but maintain soft edges on wavy-haired clients? Get the technique below:

  1. Chris always cuts the line first, and the interior second. To maintain subtle softness on blunt lines, Chris recommends using ten-tooth texturizing shears.
  2. Cut the interior layers using texturizing shears. When the textured hair air-dries into natural curls or waves, the haircut will come to life.
  3. After the cut, Chris recommends applying TIGI® Professionals Copyright Custom Care™ Treatment Base and Smooth Booster at the shampoo bowl. This quick treatment will instantly smooth out the strands so the hair is easier to blow-dry.

Pro Tip: Chris also recommends using the Smooth Booster for thick or coarse hair (like the client below!). This will enhance the cut for high-shine results clients love.

2. Eliminate The Bell-Shaped Bob

How do you avoid that unwanted bell-shaped haircut? Collapse the shape. When working through the sides, Chris recommends using light graduation with texturizing shears to soften the lines and eliminate a bottom-heavy triangular shape.

Pro Tip: Chris recommends that 75 percent of a bob should be cut from the profile, not behind the client.

3. Learn This “Layered Bob” Cheat

For effortless movement and choppy texture, people are always asking Chris about his layering techniques. His secret? The haircut is 85 percent one length. Then, he goes back and uses subtle shadow layers and graduation to give shape to the haircut without the maintenance of full blown layers.

Bonus Tip: Working With Blondes?!

Cool-girl blonde bobs should always look healthy and textured, not like chemical haircuts. That’s why Chris uses the five-minute TIGI® SOS Extreme Recovery™ Treatment on all of his blonde clients.

Why? This easy treatment contains 100 times more Keratin than just shampoo and conditioner and is clinically proven to repair internal damage while returning hair back to virgin-like condition LIKE THAT.
