Got an older client who wants to embrace her gray tones, but still look young and chic? Stylist Jackie Hovorka (@fullmetaljaxon) has a solution—this amazing smoky lilac, complete with trendy layers and a modern fringe. This transformation earned Jackie a #ONESHOT nom, so we had to know how she did it! Here’s her formula and how-to.

 

Total chair time: 5 hours

COLOR FORMULAS

  • Formula A (lightener)

    Keune Magic Blonde + 20-volume developer

  • Formula B (lightener)

    Keune Magic Blonde + 10-volume developer + Olaplex No.1

  • Formula C (shadow root)

    Kenra Professional Kenra Color 8SM + 9-volume developer + Kenra Professional Violet Booster

  • Formula D

    Kenra Professional Kenra Color 10A + 10V + 9-volume developer

HOW-TO STEPS

  • 1

    Lighten the base using Formula A. Process for 45 minutes.

  • 2

    Lighten the midlengths to ends using Formula B. Process for 35 minutes, the rinse and towel-dry.

  • 3

    Create a shadow root using Formula C, pulling some pieces through to the ends for more dimension. Jackie also applied Formula C to the occipital/undercut area for depth.

  • 4

    Tone any pieces left out with Formula D. Process for 25 minutes.

  • 5

    Jackie finished by trimming around the occipital to tighten up the cut, making it more even with the front layers. She also point-cut internal layers to create more texture and volume.
