Known for casual, cool-girl looks on stars like Margot Robbie, Brie Larson, Lily Aldridge and Gigi Hadid, Moroccanoil® Celebrity Stylist Bryce Scarlett (@brycescarlett) has not only perfected his polished-yet-effortless techniques—he also has some great advice for his fellow hairdressers. BTC sat down with Bryce at the NoMad Hotel in New York City to chat about all things hair, how to keep from burning out behind the chair, and some of his fave styling tricks—check it out!

Products Used

Moroccanoil® Luminous Hairspray is Bryce’s most versatile product in his kit.

Even before working directly with Moroccanoil as the brand’s celeb stylist, the Luminous Hairspray (which is available in three strengths: Medium, Strong and Exra Strong) was Bryce’s go-to product. “It actually has oil in it, so it’s really glossing,” he shared. Three ways he loves to use Luminous Hairspray:

  • Wet Looks: “Spray a ton throughout the hair for a shiny look that lasts all night because it’s not moisture, it’s oil,” Bryce said.
  • Slick & Sculpted: Focus the spray about an inch from the scalp and comb through to use it as a sculpting gel.
  • Glossed Ends: This is a great trick, especially on blondes, “where the ends can look fluffy or not defined,” Bryce shared. “I’ll use it pretty heavily at the ends to give a sculpted pointiness. I do this on Margot a lot!”

His favorite part about being a hairdresser is having the opportunity to help shape women’s aesthetic.

Working closely with clients is a collaborative process—not just between Bryce and the client, but also with her makeup artist, wardrobe stylist, publicist and manager. When Brie Larson did press tours for “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame” back to back, there was an overall aesthetic the entire team wanted Brie to portray.

“[Brie] was so trusting and amazing, and we came together as a team because she trusted us to do our thing and we all collaborated,” Bryce said. “As a whole, her looks throughout the tour, I felt we got to tell a collaborative story…being able to be part of how people perceive her aesthetically, that is exciting.”

No matter who the client is, there are two qualities that all the most successful hairdressers have in common.

“Personality and people skills,” Bryce said. “You can be most talented hairdresser in the world. But we are so intimately in these people’s lives—literally sometimes living in hotel rooms with them—that you have to have a roll-with-the-punches personality.”

He has some advice for people who want to level up in their career.

There is no shortcut to achieving success, to be sure, and Bryce put in the time and work to get where he is today. But his advice is to work super hard—and then learn where your boundaries are. Otherwise, you’ll burn out. Here’s how he put it:

“I worked really intensely for five years. I did not stop. And it was incredible and it put me in the place I wanted to be,” Bryce shared. “After Margot’s “I, Tonya” award season, a highlight of my career…when I came home, I was shaking. I was done. It was a real wakeup for me, because I’d just gotten off the coolest thing I’d ever done and was so happy, but I was also just destroyed. I had to learn to stop for a minute. I’m learning that balance now.”

The takeaway? “Tracey Cunningham told me to say yes to everything, and it is 100 percent true and it works—until it doesn’t,” Bryce said. “Then you wake up one morning and you’re ready to create boundaries.”
