Learn Larisa Love’s Express Foiling Technique

When you’re back in the salon with a full book, every second matters, so time-saving tricks to achieve the look of a full head of foils are crucial. Try this technique from Larisa Love (@larisadoll) that uses less than 20 foils for the FULL HEAD! Check it out below.

Larisa demoed this technique on Joico’s ALL-DAY #HAIRJOI event, a full day of free education on BTC’s Facebook from Joico artists including @iamginabianca, @omgartistry, @marybehindthechair, @richardmannah@stylistricardosantiago, @jill901 and @saga.haus. Watch Larisa’s whole technique below (scroll to 5:34:30 to start!).

The Goal: Brightness at the hairline for blonde pops whether she wears her hair down or up, plus dimension throughout the head, that gives the look of full foils but in less time.

The Plan: A foiling technique that uses less than 20 foils for the full head and mixes babylights and bold teased weaves.

The Products: Larisa used Joico Blonde Life Powder Lightener and varying levels of developer, starting with 15-volume (by mixing 10-volume and 20-volume) and increasing the developer level by 5 as she works.

Pro Tips:

  • The secret to achieving this look with few foils is in the foil folding technique. This method fits the round of the head and gives more foil “real estate” to work with. Check it out below:

  • Babylights at the hairline (both at the front of the head and the nape) give a sunkissed, natural look when she pulls her hair up and achieves the “money piece” look.

  • As you work away from the face, begin to take bold weaves and tease each weave at least once. A teased weave gives the effect of a highlight + shadow root, without multiple steps.

  • Trouble with combing out teasylights? Larisa avoids gnarly knots by prepping the hair with Joico Defy Damage ProSeries 1: Bond Protecting Color Optimizer for a smooth, strong work surface. To comb the teases out at the bowl, she applies Joico Defy Damage ProSeries 2: Bond Strengthening Color Treatment and lets it sit for 5 minutes, then gently brushes through with a Wet Brush.
