Duombre—Team Up To Tackle Balayage and Ombres!

close formula

They call themselves the “Batman and Robin of Balayage,” a dynamic duombré of sorts. Josie Vilayvanh and Deseray Thiessen¸ independent contractors at Wink on Corydon in Winnipeg, Canada, tackle their coloring duties together. Why? Not only does it allows them to take on more clients but it halves the application process time and prevents over processing, thereby protecting the integrity of the hair! Here are three color formulas from Josie and Deseray—and how they assign duties for faster balayage and ombré!

Snow White on Slate Ombré

Starting Level: 1 with prelightened warm level 6 ends and level 5 roots (a 5-month-old ombré)

Color Formulas
Formula A:
200 grams Schwarzkopf BLONDEME + 450 grams 20-volume developer
Formula B: 60 grams Wella Professionals 4/0 + 20 grams 4/71 + 60 grams 10-volume developer
Formula C: 30 grams Artégo YouUp2 Level 6 Slate + 15 grams Level 11 + 60 grams 1.8% developer

Application:
1. Section the hair into four quarters—ear to ear and front to back. Stylist 1 starts applying Formula A to the thickest, front section, backcombing the hair into foils. Stylist 2 applies Formula A in the opposite back section, backcombing from the nape up—also putting this hair into foils. Process for 45 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, apply Formula B to the sections that are not placed in foils. Process for 30 minutes, checking the porosity on the foiled sections every 15 minutes. Both stylists remove the foils at the sink.

3. Rinse and towel-dry until damp.

4. Apply Formula C throughout, process for 25 minutes, then rinse.

5. Mist Artégo Rain Dance Milk Leave-In Spray over the hair and then blow-dry. Round brush and smooth the ends with Artégo Rain Dance Serum.

The Balayage Ombré

Starting Level: 6, prelightened

Color Formulas
Formula A: 130 grams Schwarzkopf BLONDEME + 260 grams 30-volume developer
Formula B: 80 grams Wella Professionals 6/1 + 160 grams 10-volume developer
Formula C: 35 grams Artégo YouUp2 Level 11 + 70 grams Level 6 Slate + 90 grams 1.8% developer

Application
1. Section the hair into four quarters—ear to ear and front to back. Stylist 1 starts applying Formula A to the front section, painting balayage and then placing hair in foil. Stylist 2 begins backcombing in the opposite back end in slight horizontal angles from the nape up, applying Formula A.
Halfway up, Stylist 2 switches technique to balayage panting—not backcombing—and placing the hair in foil.

2. As Stylist 2 is working on the balayage, Stylist 1 applies Formula B to roots that are not in foils. Process for 45 minutes, checking for porosity on front sections every 15 minutes. Both stylists remove the foils at the sink

3. Rinse and towel-dry until damp, then apply Formula C throughout. Process for 15 minutes.

4. Mist Artégo Rain Dance Milk Leave-In Spray over the hair and then blow-dry. Round brush and smooth the ends with Artégo Rain Dance Serum.

Dark Roots Meets Blonde Ambition Ombré

Starting Level: 8

Color Formulas
Formula A: 150 grams Schwarzkopf BLONDEME + 300 grams 25-volume developer
Formula B: 40 grams Artégo YouUp2 Level 10A + 120 grams Silver + 80 grams 10-volume developer

Stylist 2 begins backcombing in the opposite back end on a slight angle horizontally from the nape up, applying Formula A. Process for 45 minutes, checking for porosity on front sections every 15 minutes. Both stylists remove the foils at the sink.

2. Rinse and towel-dry until damp.

3. Apply Formula B throughout, process for 15 minutes, then rinse.

4. Mist Artégo Rain Dance Milk Leave-In Spray over the hair and then blow-dry. Round brush and smooth the ends with Artégo Rain Dance Serum.
