Real talk. If you walk into the salon with harsh outgrowth, banding, box dye and compromised hair, it’s considered a “color correction”—and this service is very different than your routine balayage, ombré or highlights. Here’s why: This means you are coming to us with very specific needs and challenges that we need to prioritize as we work toward your dream hair. This requires a LOT of work, time and multiple sessions.
Colorist and business pro, Josie Vilayvanh—aka @josievilay to her 333k Insta followers—is breaking down everything you need to know before your first session below!

If your hair looks like the first picture and you have grown-out bleach BUT you want to look like the last photo, here are some things to consider:
1. What Is A Band & Why Do I Care?
The line where the previously lightened hair and regrowth meet—that’s the DANGER ZONE. “That’s where I would feel uneasy to lighten, because there is a 95 percent possibility of breakage there,” warns Josie. “If we decide to take on that challenge and the favor isn’t on our side, you’ll end up with a haircut as short as where the black ends.”
2. How Much Does It Cost To Get My Hair Fixed?
“If we proceed, this service isn’t cheap,” shares Josie.” Here’s why: “Labor cost can be $100 an hour. The first session took us around 6 hours, plus product (product can cost hairdressers $100-250) and taxes.”

3. Here’s What Your Hair Will Look Like Between Services
You’re going to have Level 5-6 hair between those initial appointments as we work toward your hair goals. Here’s why:
- The danger zone (aka your bands) won’t life enough compared to rest of the hair.
- We have to avoid lifting the compromised ends to prevent a “chemical haircut.”
- If you choose ASH as your underlying pigment, it will appear darker but you will still have a WARM band.
- Suggestion: Go warm, so it appears lighter and blends the band.
4. Invest In Your Long-Term Hair Health
You’ve made it to the third session, now what? You will still have to invest in your hair health as we continue to work toward your hair goals. “You’ll have to invest in products that will repair your peptides so that we are able to continue these services,” shares Josie.
5. Here’s An Example: “I need my hair fixed but I want to keep the length!”
This client came in with harsh bands but wanted to keep her length, so this is how Josie approached this color correction:
- Session #1: Goal = camouflage the band. Tone the rest of the hair to the same level.
- Session #2: Three months later, lift more of the band away.
- Session #3: Tone lighter, so when she returns, her canvas will be light.
