Are You Formulating With Clear? Your Secret Toning Weapon Explained

Looking to boost your ticket with express services that leave clients extra satisfied? Keep reading! We’re breaking down five ways to solve tricky toning scenarios by mixing Clear into your formulas—plus, how to use it in a standalone service to increase your service ticket. Keep scrolling for deets about our shine secret-weapon, how to skip the post-treatment, formulate pastel shades and more.

1. Add a shine service for haircut or blowout clients.

Regardless of your client’s color goals, glosses are great for all hair types, working to seal the outer cuticle for healthier, shinier hair. That’s where Clear comes into play. For clients that come in for a haircut or blowout, offer a gloss add-on for some much-needed shine (while adding only 10 to 20 minutes to their appointment.) Check out the results below:

“Glazing with Wella Professionals Shinefinity 00/00 Crystal Glaze absolutely refreshed her old color and also made her hair feel incredible!” says Wella Professionals S.A. Senior Ambassador Jadie Herbst (@jadieprofessionals). “Because Shinefinity is an acidic color line, it leaves the hair in an incredible condition and the shine is next-level.”

2. Use this trick to avoid blonde toner grabbing too dark:

New York-based hairstylist Heather Burns (@beautybyheatherburns) created this bright pearly blonde by diluting her formula with Clear—here’s why:

“I mixed 00/00 Crystal Glaze into my formula to ensure that the tones didn’t grab too harshly and to give the hair an extra boost of shine,” explains Heather. Apply with a bottle at the sink on towel-dried hair and fully saturate from roots to ends, brushing it through. Process for 20 minutes, cleanse and style as desired.

Formula: Shinefinity 0.75 oz 09/61 + 0.75 oz 08/98 + 0.5 oz 00/00 Crystal Glaze + Shinefinity Activator

3. Create pastel colors with Clear—get the formula below…

For clients that aren’t ready to commit to a bold color, try adding Clear to ease them into a trendy, more subtle pop of color. For this pastel raspberry shade, Wella Professionals N.A. Signature Artist and Brand Education Specialist Jessica Stranieri (@jessica.wella) used Shinefinity 07/75 mixed with Shinefinity 00/00 Crystal Glaze (equal parts) and Shinefinity Activator.

Pro Tip: Shinefinity 00/00 Crystal Glaze can be used to manipulate results for a wide range of clients: “Adapt your results through choosing to apply on damp or dry hair, using heat to intensify or adding the Crystal Glaze booster to pastelize,” Jessica says.

4. Tone with no post-treatment needed!

Shinefinity features pH balance technology which means you don’t need a post-treatment after you tone—saving you time and getting clients out of your chair faster. Here’s why:

“It falls in between an acidic and an alkaline pH, and it creates that perfect balance that your hair really needs. It starts off slightly alkaline in order to swell the cuticle enough for color penetration. And, as it touches the hair, it will gently start to decrease in pH,” Jessica explains. That’s where the intense shine and zero damage comes from!

5. Try this express diffused rose gold color block:

Our Instagram feeds have been FULL of color blocking: Whether bold or diffused, color blocking will continue to be a popular client request this year. Keep scrolling to learn how Jessica creates a soft, diffused color block and get her shine secret-weapon. (Hint: It’s Clear!)

Step 1: In the back, apply Formula A at the roots to prelightened Level 9 hair. Use large zigzag sections to allow for intensity of tone while creating a blended, diffused look. Process the roots for five minutes, and then apply Formula A to the midlengths and ends. Process for 15 more minutes. (Tap the beaker in the image below to get the formulas.)

Pro Tip: “Apply to dry hair for the most intensity,” Jessica says.
