Bob & Lob-Cutting Tips For Textured Haircuts

What’s the difference between cutting a textured and layered bob? How can you achieve subtle graduation on a soft blunt bob haircut? We’re sharing some of our favorite bob- and lob-cutting tips from Chris Jones, aka @chrisjones_hair to his 233k Instagram followers, that will answer all of your cool-girl texture questions. Plus (since who doesn’t love a good quickie?), we’ve included some super satisfying and educational technique videos that will make you wanna pick up your ✂️ and snip away! Get it all below.

1. How To Achieve Subtle Graduation

Want a fast but effective way to create subtle graduation? Try slide cutting with a texturizing shear, starting higher in the back and lower toward the front. “You don’t want to wipe out the corner near the face,” warns Chris. “Enter the section leading with the straight blade [using the ARC™ Scissors SYMMETRY 30/2 Reversible Texturizer], closing the shear on the way out. This allows you to remove weight and create movement in one step!” Watch the full technique below.

2. The Difference Between Texture & Layers

Textured bobs are all over Instagram, but your client might not know what finished look they’re really requesting when they bring in their inspo pics. For example: If they bring in the photo on the right (below), they might not end up with the one on the left. When curled, the haircut looks a lot more layered than it actually is… “When in fact the haircut is 90 percent one length with just enough texture to add movement,” shares Chris. “Know the difference and you can avoid those hard to style, over-layered cuts.

3. The KEY To A Soft Blunt Bob

Picture this: You cut a bob wet, blow-dry and the sides shrink up! OH NO, right? To prevent this, dry-cut the sides to take out the guess work. “I like to cut the nape area wet—it allows me to get the precise line I’m looking for,” dishes Chris. “Once the line is in, I blow-dry and flat-iron to finish the cut dry. I love the combination of a strong perimeter but with a soft interior.”

4. Textured Lobs & Bobs With Blunt Lines

To create texture, Chris works with ARC™ Scissors SYMMETRY 10/10 Reversible Texturizer to cut the hair in its natural fall without pushing her strands out of the shear. This tool allows him to ‘chip away’ at the blunt line until it’s exactly the way he wants it. “Think of it as sketching with a pencil rather than drawing with a pen,” dishes Chris.
