We’re calling it now—THIS is the new blowout your clients will be asking for. Created by Bob Recine for Brandon Maxwell SS20 at New York Fashion Week, the “American Blowout” is voluminous without being sky-high, with a touch of gem-like shine thanks to precisely-placed airflow. Models like Bella Hadid rocked faux freckles for that “straight off a Montauk beach” look, giving a relaxed, effortless feel. Combine these easy-breezy beauty looks with classic tailoring, all-American denim and the Shake Shack burgers guests could snack on at the show, and it’s clear that this is NYFW SS20’s most covetable vibe. BTC watched Recine create this look backstage at the show, so we’re here to give you the deets on how you can do it yourself!

The key components of this American Blowout are:

  • Breezy bounce
  • High shine
  • Healthy, not crunchy, finish

Follow these steps to perfect this straight-off-the-runway blowout your clients will be requesting in 2020!

HOW-TO STEPS

1

If you’re starting with wet hair, power-dry with the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer professional edition using the Professional Concentrator until hair is damp. Backstage stylists love this dryer because it dries hair very quickly, so you can spend more time styling.

2

Saturate the hair with Redken Full Frame 07 All-Over Volumizing Mousse.

3

Blow-dry hair section by section using the Dyson Supersonic™ professional edition. Recine chose the Dyson for this look because he has control over both speed and heat, and the Styling Concentrator allows for precision airflow to create a smooth, sleek look.

4

At the hairline, direct hair back to achieve that easy bounce. The precision of the Dyson Supersonic™ helps to smooth the cuticle, adding volume and shine without frizz.

Once blow-dried, divide the front sections into two, using the natural part to guide you. Wrap each section backward over large Velcro rollers. Loosely pin up the back to keep the volume elevated.

Pro Tip: Backstage, Recine covered the set style with a hair net and placed pretty holographic papers between the clips and the hair to prevent creases. In the salon, you can do this too—your clients will love the supermodel-like attention!

Right before the runway show—or before your guest dashes out the door—unpin and remove rollers. Spray Redken Fashion Work 12 or Redken Forceful 23 (depending on hair type) onto a Mason Pearson brush before brushing through to finish the style.
