4 Hair Rules Your Fine and Thinning Clients Will Thank You For
Fine-haired clients will be loyal if you can give them the volume they crave, so we went to fine hair expert Manny San Martin, a NIOXIN Top Artist, for his best tips on cutting and styling fine hair to give the appearance of fullness.
1. Keep fine-haired clients on the shorter side.
- Know This: The weight of long hair can cause fine textures to look droopy, so explain to clients that bringing up the length will offer more volume.
- Do This: Start with a strong perimeter, then create soft, point-cut layers from the parietal upward. Watch Manny create a full bob below!
2. Even curly-haired clients should have shorter length.
- Know This: The same rules apply for curly, fine hair—less length equals more volume.
- Do This: Graduate the hair slightly so the shorter hair at the bottom supports the rest of the hair. Leave the top layers disconnected from the layers underneath to avoid a boxy shape.
3. Choose products that are made for fine hair.
- Know This: Heavy products and anything oil- or petroleum-based won’t do fine-haired clients any favors, and there are product lines specifically made for fine and thinning hair.
- Do This: Swap your client’s dry shampoo with NIOXIN Instant Fullness Dry Shampoo, which Manny describes as “blotting paper for the scalp.” Its two absorption particles, tapioca and starch, minimize scalp sebum (which weighs down hair) and fatten individual strands.
4. Teach her to style right.
- Know This: Bobs can help create the appearance of more fullness, but if she can’t blow-dry it herself, her bob will be limp.
- Do This: Teach her the right way to blow-dry her bob:
- Apply NIOXIN Therm Activ Protector to damp hair and comb through.
- Work in NIOXIN Bodifying Foam with fingers.
- Starting at the nape, divide the hair into narrow horizontal sections.
- Dry each section with a small round brush, lifting at the root for maximum volume.
- Work up the sides in this manner.
- Curl the hair for movement, then finish with Instant Fullness Dry Shampoo for additional lift.
