1. “How do you usually wear your hair?”

Your client’s answer dictates the canvas you work with and the placement of the lightener. If they always wear their hair curly; Brendnetta suggests applying lightener to their curly hair. If they always wear their hair straight, she says to blow-dry the hair straight before lightening.

2. “What do you like about the hair in your inspo picture?”

When your client walks in with a reference pic, ask them what they specifically like about the hair in the picture. This directs them to look beyond the model and consider what about the hair drew them to that look. “The more they understand you’re looking at the hair, the better you’re going to be able to understand what their eye is catching,” says Brendnetta. Which means you can give them exactly what they’re looking for.

Understand your client’s commitment to their maintenance so you can then set realistic expectations and offer your professional suggestions for…

• Shampoos, conditioners and styling products to use
• How often they should schedule toner-only vs. full service appointments
• How long the new color will last
