1. It’s All In The Sectioning & Placement

The key to dimensional blondes is in the sectioning and placement of the lightener. Sarmad recommends this, “I often do 1/8 inch horizontal slices in four sections with an equal amount left out in between to create good depth & dimension.”

2. V-Shape Application Brings The Drama

There are multiple ways to place the lightener when balayaging or foiling (v-shape, w-shape, on a diagonal, etc.), but it all depends on the desired end result. If you’re client wants a lot of drama, Sarmad advises to paint using the v-shape for a striking contrast.

3. Use Foils

If your client has naturally darker hair, it’s faster if you use foils during the lightening process. “I use foils often as many of my clients have dark, dense hair,” says Sarmad. “I use no heat in my lifting method and the use of foils helps with that process.”

4. Tone With A Brush Or Bottle?

Whether you tone using a brush or a bottle depends on the consistency of the product. Sarmad tones with a bowl and brush when using the thicker Schwarzkopf Professional Igora Vibrance Activator 13-volume and with an applicator bottle when using the runnier Schwarzkopf Professional Igora Vibrance Activator Gel 6-volume.
