2. Mini Money Piece Braids
If you log onto the internet, we bet you’ll see mini accent braids—think Sharon Tate’s ’60s vibes—within MINUTES of scrolling. These trendy money piece braids are an easy way to add an element of coolness to WFH style, a *casual look* for running errands OR try pairing the braids with a half-upstyle or waves to add some spice.
“You’re going to see a lot of low maintenance hairstyles like braids,” says Sally Hershberger (@sallyhershberger). “Both ultra-chic and casual, these hairstyles are easy, no fuss options for any texture or length.”
Pro Tip: Offer to teach clients how to style the look at home before they leave your chair. Educating clients on styling tips and tricks is the No.1 way to keep them coming back!

Plus, because we’re going back to our Y2K roots with hair trends this year, a side bangs revival is on the horizon. You heard it here first!

6. Face-Framing Tendrils
“In 2022, hair tendrils will be very popular when wearing your hair up,” says Alex Brown (@alexbrownhair), a celeb stylist and Chicago-based salon owner. “They can be braided, straight, or slightly waved. This adds a bit of style and chic-ness to any bun or second/third day dirty hair.”

7. Hair Tinsel
Last year, we saw a quick throwback to feather extensions and colorful streaks á la Avril Lavigne that really said, “Mom, this is NOT a phase!” For 2022, we predict that hair tinsel and shimmery strands will go viral. Get ahead of the trend and consider offering hair tinsel installation for festival season as a fast add-on that will boost your ticket!

8. The Soft, Sexy Blowout
There is a blowout for every client and one of 2022’s favorites will be soft, blown-out hair with a classic curl, says Drea Jaclyn (@andreahenty), Beverly Hills salon owner and Line One Hair Extensions founder. This year, there is an overall emphasis on soft, healthy hair! Think, “A soft, beautiful blowout with volume and a little bevel at the ends,” adds celeb stylist and Redken ambassador Cassondra Kaeding (@ckaedingcolor).
Along with these softer blowouts, you can expect: “Long hair that’s smooth but not bone straight, just healthy looking or a little messed up but not contrived,” adds celeb stylist and Moroccanoil® ambassador Greg Gilmore (@greg_gilmore). “It will be a professed version of [the] beach wave or waves period—loose curls to almost just straight.”

9. Spiral Perm Curls
Did Lady Gaga single-handedly bring back the ’80s spiral perm after the “House of Gucci” premiere? After seeing this dreamy version of the retro curls on Khloe Kardashian by her stylist Andrew Fitzsimons (@andrewfitzsimons), we think so.

10. Sleek & Spiky Topknots
The new model-off-duty hair trend deserves a spot in an early 2000s music video. We love the contrast of a sleek base and a spiky topknot—and so does Bella Hadid and all of the NYC fashion students on TikTok.

11. Extra Long Braids
“I’m predicting a surge of protective styles such as braids,” says Jared Henderson who styles Doja Cat and Saweetie. “This summer [2021] when quarantine restrictions had finally let up a bit, I think we all were so happy to be ‘outside’ and finally have a reason to look cute that we may have overdone it a bit with all of the hair coloring and heat styling.”
Trend Cheat Sheet: For clients looking for a cool braided style without tension, try jumbo knotless. This protective style uses large sections and feed-in braids that are not anchored to the scalp—and they look so good!

13. ’90s + Y2K Hair Trend Revival
With this influx of Y2K and ’90s references, we’re about to re-download Myspace, add pink streaks to our hair and start putting crystals on everything. But seriously, according to “Euphoria” lead hairstylist Kim Kimble (@kimblehaircare), we will be seeing a lot more ’90s-inspired hairstyles on our screens and our clients’ mood boards.
With this will also come a revival of throwback accessories, says celeb stylist, educator and Redken Global Consultant Vernon François (@vernonfrancois). For example: We LOVE the embellishments he used on Demi Singleton. “[It] is so much fun, and many people are inspired to explore their own take on this,” says Vernon.

14. ’90s Grunge, Air-Dried Hair
Did you spot Hunter Schafer’s new Kurt Cobain grunge bob on “Euphoria” by Kim Kimble? Celebrity hairdresser and Virtue® Creative Director Adir Abergel predicts ’90s nostalgic-inspired, androgynous and air-dried texture—think Drew Barrymore and River Phoenix!
Feeling anxious to experiment with new trends outside of your comfort zone? Here’s some insightful advice that we LOVE from Adir:
- Think bold and also understand your client’s basic needs.
- Try new things on yourself and on your friends. Get a large array of tools that you can play with like smaller curling irons or different sizes of pins to try a rick-rack technique!
- Get out of your comfort zone and explore different techniques either by air drying or using hot tools.

15. Half-Up, Half-Down
After years of dramatic ponytails—from high to low and everything in between—the trends have pivoted in a new direction. Half-up styles are going to be EVERYWHERE in 2022. Click here for a half-up twist tutorial from Kenra Professional!

More Specifically, Double Ponytails
Another version we love of the half-upstyle? Take the youthful “pigtails” hairstyle and approach it with fresh new elements: Elevate the double ponies by leaving out two face-framing tendrils, experimenting with different placement and strategically leaving some hair down.
