Celeb hairdresser and Oribe Brand Ambassador Stacey Ciceron (@staceyciceron) walked us through the collection and let us play with the products, plus we got to see a gorgeous model with a mix of type 3 and type 4 curls. Stacey recently joined the Oribe family and said she was proud to be part of the product development, which took over a year. “This is something [brand founder Oribe Canales] always wanted,” she said. “He wanted his products to be for everyone.”

Products Used

The line extension features four products created specifically for curly and coily hair types (or curl types 3 and 4). Here’s what they are and Stacey’s pro tips on how to use them:

  • Moisture & Control Deep Treatment Masque: This extremely rich masque is packed with shea butter and amino acids to help mangeability and restore curl elasticity. “My favorite way to use this masque is with a steamer,” Stacey said. No steamer? Try a plastic cap under a hooded dryer. “Some kind of heat source, especially with low-porosity hair, will let the masque penetrate better.”

  • Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler: This silky product helps prevent curls and coils from breaking by making it easy to detangle. “This is the first step after you rinse your shampoo, conditioner and treatment,” Stacey shared. “It’s my non-negotiable first step regardless of hair type or texture…it’s a great way to even out porosity and prepare the hair for more products.”

  • Styling Butter Curl Enhancing Crème: This ultra-hydrating styler is Stacey’s go-to for twist-outs and wash-and-go styles on dryer, thicker curls and coils because it’s a thicker, more nourishing product. Plus, it’s got a natural—not glossy—finish.

  • Curl Gelée for Shine & Definition: If you ARE looking for a glossier, shinier finish, this gelée is for you, Stacey said. Ideal for finer curls and coils, it will offer shine and definition, “MINUS the flaking and MINUS the crunching,” she added.

Now that you know all about the range, here are Stacey’s three top curly and coily hair tips:

  1. Avoid overmanipulating the hair. “Everybody wants definition and added moisture,” Stacey said, “but overmanipulating prevents this and can cause breakage and frizz. Remember that curls and coils need to be treated gently! Use a detangler like the Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler and your hands to begin the detangling process on wet hair, then switch to a paddle brush or Denman brush to work product into the hair.

  1. A spray bottle is a tool, too! While curls and coils are often dryer hair types, that doesn’t mean they are more porous. Even hair porosity is crucial to products performing properly, so Stacey uses a spray bottle of water all the time. Use it to rehydrate the hair to make sure it’s evenly wet or damp before applying product or detangling—bonus points if it’s warm water, which can help open the cuticle and allow product to penetrate.

  1. Grocery store butters + oils aren’t a great idea. While curly clients might be reading on the Internet to cover their hair in coconut oil from Whole Foods, it’s your job as a professional to explain why this isn’t ideal. “You have to take time to understand your hair, because you could be whipping up the wrong things at home,” Stacey shared. “A company like Oribe takes the guesswork out. They know the right amount of ingredients that are going to hydrate your hair and give you elasticity and definition.”
