4 Hair Extension Dos + Don’ts From Kylie Jenner’s Stylist

Priscilla Valles’ Celebrity Secrets To Becoming An Extension Expert

Five years ago, celebrity hair extensionist Priscilla Valles (@priscillavalles) went from Hollywood’s best-kept secret to a household name. It was one Instagram post from Chrissy Teigen showing a missing tape-in extension that tagged Priscilla—basically telling the internet, “Hey! I get hair extensions and so do all of your fave celebs.” Flash forward to 2021 and extension services are one of the easiest ways to grow your luxe salon business FAST.

Dreaming of offering extensions, but don’t know where to start? BTC Editorial Director Lauren Rees interviewed Priscilla to get her best dos and don’ts, plus the deets on her debut extension line: Glam Seamless x Priscilla Valles. Watch the video and keep scrolling for tips!

#1: Don’t let extensions fall flat and monotone.

Build custom color blends with shade-matching.

Clients who want fast highlights or lowlights, but don’t want to sit through hours of chemical processes? How about that client who has been mentioning ~going blonde~ for a year but never goes through with it? Shade-matching extensions is an easy way to build a custom blend of highs and lows that work with any starting canvas, plus you can charge 3x more than color services!

Here are a few things to remember:

  • When matching the ends, there is typically more than one tone.
  • Oftentimes, the midlengths and nape will be darker.
  • Build the blend with multiple shades. Priscilla will typically recommend three different shades to match.
  • Glam Seamless x Priscilla Valles extensions are custom rooted, except platinum and black to prevent exposing the bonds.
  • Match with the Standard Color Ring or Color Swatch Book.

#2: Don’t miss the opportunity to build your business with extensions.

Start educating yourself on methods and trends.

Did you know The Salon by Priscilla Valles at the Palms in Las Vegas has a separate VIP room where clients have their extensions removed? Extensions are an intimate service and the privacy element will go a long way with clients! Getting educated on installation, removal and business from experts for pro tips like this will set you apart.

#3: Don’t cut extensions with scissors only.

Blend with a razor and finish with thinning shears.

Priscilla never cuts extensions with shears to prevent blunt, choppy lines in Keratin Fusion Bonds and Hand-Tied Tape-Ins. Instead, she uses an Extension Blending Razor to achieve the most natural blend possible, and then finishes with Extension Thinning Shears to taper the ends.

Practice makes perfect! If you’re not a cutting specialist, don’t pass off the haircut to another stylist. Instead, pick up the razor and thinning shears yourself and practice until you feel confident to see your vision through—from installation to the haircut.

#4: Don’t be afraid to introduce clients to extensions.

Educate clients to build loyalty.

“I start off a lot of consultations saying, ‘Extensions have a bad reputation because of bad application.’” The best way to build client loyalty is to make them feel confident that their hair’s integrity is your top priority, and then have the proper education to back it up.

Clients unsure about extensions? Ask them why. Most likely, it’s a concern like damage. This is your opportunity to educate clients and introduce them to services. This is so important, because extensions can be one of the most expensive salon services. If they’re going to be investing a lot, trust plays a key role.
