BTS: Kevin Turns Nostalgia & Clipper Work Into Retro Revival Collection

Meet Retro Revival: The latest creation of Kevin Luchmun (@kevinluchmun), Andis® International Artistic Team Lead and #ONESHOT Winner. Featuring a sculpted, tapered afro, a contemporary mullet and sharp undercut bob, Kevin’s Retro Revival collection is one that fuses nostalgia with modernity in a perfectly balanced fashion. 

Come behind the scenes with BTC in this exclusive interview with Kevin to learn about his collaboration with Andis®, the inspiration behind the collection and how it came to fruition.

Retro Revival: Behind the Inspiration

As critically-acclaimed barber, photographer and creative director, Kevin had unique control and freedom in creating this classic, but cutting-edge collection: “Rather than build on contemporary trends, it was my intention to reinvent retro and older styles from the ground up,” Kevin explained. “The word retro can mean anything: For me, it’s taking influences and inspiration from the past and putting your own little twist on it,” Kevin told BTC.

Kevin’s collection highlights different hair textures, colors, playful wardrobe, a range of striking silhouettes and is gender-inclusive, celebrating his masterful artistry through diverse craftsmanship and expression.

Kevin commented that: “One of my favorite things about the collection was actually getting to work with female models and using barbering techniques on [their hair]. I think female haircuts and longer lengths are always associated with working with shears, and I wanted to showcase how you can work with clippers and still create soft, beautiful looks and techniques.” His tool of choice? The Andis® reVITE Clipper.

Debuting Retro Revival at BarberCon:

The collection was released to the public for the first time at BarberCon‘s 20th anniversary event in Dallas, Texas on August 27, 2023: “My experience with BarberCon is always great,” Kevin said, adding that, “It was great getting to showcase the collection at BarberCon because I had done a class on how to create collections and where you draw inspiration from.”

“I’ve been attending since maybe 2015, and it’s a great place to network and meet people. I’m always left inspired. Whether it’s to do a collection or collaborate with people, I think it’s a great place to re-inspire yourself,” he remarked.
