Toning Over A Shadow Root—Do This!
A shadow root creates a deep base for ribbons of dimension to fall off AND it helps the grow out process look naturally blended. Here’s how Sarmad tones over a shadow root:
- Apply a 1/2-inch shadow root to towel-dried hair. Process for 10 minutes.
- Then, smudge the root area and process for 5 minutes.
- After the shadow root is applied, then apply toner with a brush or bottle.
- Work in 1-inch slices and gently massage the toner into the hair while processing.
- Process everything for 10 to 15 minutes.

Tip For Applying Toners: Bottle v. Brush
Because not every client is the same, Sarmad customizes his developer choice based on the density and thickness of the hair. IGORA VIBRANCE® has two developers—an activator gel and lotion—so YOU control the application and choose the best-fit tool:
- Precision & Coverage: Sarmad uses the 13-volume Activator Lotion because it transforms liquid color into cream consistency and applies toner with a large brush for maximum coverage.
- Quick & Even Results: For efficiency, bottle applications are a great move. When applying with a bottle, it’s easiest to maintain control with a liquid consistency so Sarmad uses the 6-volume Activator Gel.
