1. It’s More Precise

“Don’t cut blindly into the hair,” advises Evan. Because curly hair moves a lot, you can’t treat it as this solid form. Instead, you really have to move the hair around and make sure it’s geometrically connected by cutting one curl at a time. Otherwise, the shape won’t come together and you’ll end up with long pieces falling into the face or one side that is short than the other.

2. It’s Easy To Customize Per Client

Each curly-haired client has many different types of curls throughout her hair. So you’re tasked with finding a way to connect and create a cohesive shape amongst the different curl patterns going on, which is why Evan cuts one curl at a time. “Cutting one curl at a time allows me to tailor each haircut to each individual curl pattern,” he shares.

3. It’s A Simple (And Visual) Technique

If you’re a visual person, you’re going to LOVE this technique! After the consultation, you can just start blunt cutting each curl so it fits the shape you have in mind. “I treat each individual curl as one unit, so it’s very simple,” says Evan. “You can change the way that curly hair looks and lays by the direction you’re holding a curl when you cut it.”

The best part? You should cut her hair while it’s dry and in its natural state so there’s no need to wash or straighten her hair first because that’ll just disrupt the curl pattern. Just be sure to tell her to come in with her hair how she regularly wears it! 😉
