Expand Your Service Menu With Low-Maintenance, Vivid Color Transformations
Vivid colors can feel intimidating, but they don’t have to be. #ONESHOT Winner and PRAVANA Creator Kimberly Ibbotson (@kimberlytayhair) shares her expert tips for blending vivid color with natural tones to help clients step out of their comfort zone while you build a versatile service menu. Keep reading to explore Kimberly’s sectioning, blending and application techniques, showcased on BTC University and learn how to use PRAVANA ChromaSilk VIVIDS to create stunning, low-maintenance transformations that clients will love.
Paint the Picture: Create a Visual Swatch Guide
Adding vivid color to natural hair can feel like a daunting decision, so communication with your client is key. Here’s a simple way to visually indicate the palette you’ll be applying to ensure client comfortability…
Kimberly suggests taking a white piece of paper—or a piece of fabric that is similar in color to a lightened hair canvas and using it as a guide. Take your vivid colors and apply them to the paper the same way that you will apply them to the hair. This will allow your client to see color palettes and level of blend that will appear once applied to their hair.
As Kimberly reminds us, this is an important first step to ensure proper communication and prepare your client for the results. It can also help an indecisive client choose their color palette. This is your time to make any modifications before starting the application on your client.

Perfect the Process: Ensure a Clean Application With These Tips
Vivid colors can easily become messy and mistakes can be difficult to clean up, so staying organized is crucial. To ensure each color is applied intentionally and cleanly, here are some simple habits to adopt when creating vivid looks:
- Take your time with sectioning and make sure the hair is pulled back neatly and precisely. Secure any hair that won’t be colored with clips, as you don’t want any accidental smudges or transfers.
- Use a piece of plastic to create an extra layer between the hair and the cape. This means that your cape won’t have to be cleaned off throughout the process and any transfer can be easily removed. You can also use a piece of plastic to separate the ChromaSilk Vivids from the ChromaSilk HydraGloss in a single-process application.
- It’s simple, but make sure to have a towel on hand. You should be wiping your hands between every vivid color, and using it to prevent excess product from transferring onto other sections of hair or the cape.

Master the Mix: The Power of Clear in Your Formula
When it comes to mixing your vivid colors, creating a dilution with clear is your secret weapon.
As the PRAVANA ChromaSilk Vivids are so vibrant, it is best to start with a base of clear and slowly mix in the vivid shades. Depending on the shade, this can amplify your color or make it more of a pastel shade. Using the Clear – Dilute lets you totally customize your palette and embrace your creativity.
Plus, as Kimberly explains, starting with a Clear-Dilute base will help you control the color you want to create in the end while avoiding wasted product.
