Do This To Add Depth When Balayaging Red Hair

Here’s How To Add Depth When Balayaging Red Hair

Balayage isn’t just for blondes! BTC Team Member Adina Pignatare (@adina_pignatare) and L’Oréal Professionnel took us through how to add depth to rich copper reds in the video tutorial above! Scroll down to get her lightener placement tips, plus learn how she pre-treats the hair to remove any metal buildup. Don’t forget to check out the stunning before and after!

Detox The Hair To Prevent Damage

Adina works in a small town with a lot of hard water and well water, so it’s easy for metals to build up in her client’s hair. To prevent any surprises when coloring, she uses L’Oréal Professionnel’s Metal Detox system to treat the hair as she works. Here’s how she does it:

  • First, lightly mist the hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox Pre-Treatment to neutralize any metal before balayaging.

  • Proceed to balayage the hair and let process.

  • Next, rinse the lightener out and shampoo with L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox Sulfate-Free Shampoo to remove the metal from the hair.

  • Adina notes that if toning the hair after, it’s safe to cleanse with a regular shampoo.

  • Finish the service with L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox Mask to seal the cuticle, preventing metals from getting back into the hair.

Adding Brightness & Depth

Adina balayages in horizontal sections, leaving a triangle section out in between for depth. She paints on a slant, with the highest point going toward the face, because it grows out effortlessly with no hard lines. To achieve maximum brightness, Adina paints the underside of a few balayage sections. Here’s how:

  • First, place the lightener on top of your gloved hand.

  • When painting, as you move toward the ends, place the hair on top of the lightener on your hand and continue saturating the hair.

  • Blend out any harsh lines by holding the hair upside down and feathering up.

Start In The Front For A Natural Look

A little girl’s natural hair is usually the brightest at the hairline, so Adina prefers to start balayaging in the front to mimic the look of natural hair. If you start in the back, rinse the hair before proceeding to the front section to avoid getting it too bright.

Keep The Brush Flat

If you notice spots in the hair when balayaging, it might be due to the brush’s placement. Adina holds the balayage brush in a horizontal position, flat against the hair. Pressing the brush down while holding it vertically can cause spots
