We got every detail at the virtual R+Co BLEU launch, so keep scrolling for a glimpse at these gorgeous products and the brand’s sustainability commitment.
What is R+Co BLEU?
Inspired by the career and expertise of legendary hairdresser and R+Co co-founder Garren, R+Co BLEU combines modernity and style with formulation innovations and sustainability. “BLEU is healthy, shiny, sexy, beautiful hair,” Garren said. The range of 21 products (shampoos, conditioners, masks and stylers) are to R+Co as Prada is to Miu Miu—the couture-caliber sister to the ready-to-wear line. R+Co is downtown, R+Co BLEU is uptown. What both ranges share are roots in a collective approach to hairdressing, high performance and social consciousness.
The basis of the R+Co brand has always been the idea that a pro stylist knows how to use and layer products to achieve unique results for every client. The R+Co Collective, including Howard McLaren, Ashley Streicher and Richy Kandasamy, inspire the core collection and signature capsules, but it is Garren’s storied five-decade career that influenced the creation of R+Co BLEU.
“Garren is the go-to hairdresser for transformations, for people who depend on their looks for a living,” R+Co President Daniel Langer said. And it’s true—he’s transformed Farrah Fawcett, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham, Karlie Kloss…the list goes on. “Garren’s hands have been in the hair of truly everyone who we think of as a fashion icon over the last five decades. He’s done more magazine covers than any hairdresser ever has…which lends itself to this idea of collaboration in R+Co BLEU. When you’re working with the top editors and top photographers and top stylists and top makeup artists in the world, you really are working as a team to set the trends even before they come of the moment.”
The Aesthetic
R+Co BLEU’s packaging is TRULY a vibe, with historical fashion roots that can only come from someone like Garren.
“I remember this one moment, I was in Paris with Vogue and Polly Mellen and Irving Penn, and we were at the couture show of Yves Saint Laurent, this was the late ’70s, early ’80s, and it hit me—that was so powerful for me, because of the elegance and the vivid colors, this dark sapphire blue which became our base color,” Garren said.
The rich textures tone-on-tone colors Garren witnessed are translated to BLEU through shapes, juxtaposed matte and shiny finishes and clean curves—conceived as precious objects, home accessories that look lovely on display and pack graphic punch.
“I was always concerned that clients and people looking for products don’t know where their hair belongs,” Garren said. That’s why the range includes four categories, with each having its own distinct shape and color-coded cap to distinguish each category’s benefits:
- Blue: Universal products
- Orange-Red: Color products
- Green: Repair and moisture products
- Purple: Volume products
Cycle of Sustainability
Besides the packaging being beautiful, it is both recycled and recyclable to create a continuous cycle of sustainability. It’s one of the first brands to use 100% recyclable packaging.
- Bottles and jars are made of 100% post-consumer recycled material, which uses 88% less energy to produce to further lower carbon footprint.
- Tubes are made from bioresin sugarcane plastic, which has been shown to biodegrade between 60 to 180 days.
- Canisters are made from 100% aluminum, a recyclable resource.
- Cartons and secondary packaging are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-certified farms and use soy-based inks.
Every product includes a sheet of seed-embedded paper that, when planted, grows wildflowers. Plus, with every BLEU purchase, a donation is made to promote reforestation efforts around the world through One Tree Planted.
Ingredients & Fragrance
All products are color-safe and provide UV and heat protection up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The Leaping Bunny certified formulations are vegan and cruelty-free, and do not contain gluten, parabens, sulfates, mineral oil or petrolatum. The proprietary BLEU Molecule Complex in every product builds strength and shine to leave the hair in better condition than it was before.
R+Co is known for its complex and luxurious scents, and R+Co BLEU is no exception. The scent, “Light Waves,” is bright, sparkling and glam, created by one of the fragrance industry’s leading perfumers.
“This year more than ever we’re focused on self-care and wellness. We’ve also realized how small the world is and how important our individual roles are in that world and that the little things matter,” Daniel said. “More than ever it really is about that kind of new luxury…it’s about not compromising, it’s about being able to have the highest performance self-care with the highest levels of sustainability with consciousness mixed in.”
