Work Smarter, Not Harder With These Game-Changing Tips

Let’s settle this once and for all: you don’t need to over-foil or spend endless hours to create head-turning, dimensional color. TRUSS Professional Global Ambassador Asil Simsek (@asil) has perfected a smarter, more efficient way to tackle even the toughest color transformations. In this BTC University course breakdown, we share his tips from “The Foilayage Blueprint for Levels 3–4”. With strategic foil placement, simple teasing techniques and a focus on keeping hair healthy, Asil’s approach ensures stunning results with less time and effort.

Be Strategic With Foil Placement

Asil’s foilayage technique is designed to work with the hair’s natural structure rather than against it. The result? A seamless, dimensional look with fewer foils while maintaining depth and movement.

Here’s how he achieves this:

  • Follow the head’s natural curves: Instead of rigid, straight lines, Asil sections the back of the head using scooped sections, adjusting to the head’s natural shape. This allows for larger sections while still creating a smooth, blended gradient.
  • Avoid harsh lines: By working with the hair’s natural fall, the result is a soft transition rather than an over-foiled, artificial look.
  • Use curved sections behind the ear: When working on the sides, Asil scoops out a curved shape instead of taking straight or diagonal lines. That way, the color flows naturally whether the hair is worn up or down.
  • Frame the face with lightness: To enhance brightness around the face, Asil places the lightener slightly higher in the front, ensuring it blends seamlessly into the rest of the color.

With this method, foils are placed only where they’re needed, creating balanced dimension without over-processing.

Use Teasing to Create a Bold Ribbon Effect

The ribbon effect creates bold, defined highlights that add dimension, contrast and movement to the hair. Unlike a fully blended balayage, he ensures the ribbons of dimension keep lighter pieces distinct, making them pop against the darker base.

For a high-impact ribbon effect, Asil teases strategically—focusing on the midshaft rather than the root. This keeps the lightened sections crisp and well-defined while maintaining depth. Over-teasing can blur the contrast, making the color blend too much into the hair. By keeping the teasing controlled and the sections clean, he ensures the ribbons of blonde stand out while still looking seamless and natural.

Preserve Hair Strength Without Sacrificing Results

When lifting to a Level 8 on dark bases, healthy hair is essential to lightening through brass without unwanted damage. Asil uses TRUSS Professional K’Recovery in the toner mix before lightening to make the hair more healthy and shiny. The proteins, amino acids and lipids help lock the color into the hair and ensure that the hair healthier post-bleach services.
