The short video above by Zach Mesquit shares how he achieved a shaded rooty blonde look. The client is a natural level 2. Zach has been doing her platinum color for a while now and she wanted to switch it up for the fall. Zach sees a lot of colorists who like to bleach the root out to almost white and then go in and shadow, which in his opinion makes no sense because, “Why would I do the unnecessary amount of bleaching if I’m going to be darkening the root, right?” So, Zach lifts to about a level 8 lemon yellow first, then goes in with his root shadow.

He used Fanola 9.0 8.11 and a drop of violet. To make a smokey beige medium blonde he applied to to the root only, let it sit for about 20 mins, then dragged pieces down. Finally, he smooshed the color all over at the bowl for a few mins and finished off with the “no orange” blue shampoo.
