Talk about a transformation! Not only is this rich red shag totally on-trend for fall but it was a collab between two LA-based stylists! Ashlee Norman (@ashleenormanhair) started by cutting a face-framing modern shag and then Cares Mills (@colorbycares) created a radiant red hue that complimented the layers and disconnection throughout the cut. Watch how it’s done in the video below, then keep scrolling to get the formulas and how-to steps!

FORMULA STEPS

1. Starting in the fringe area, create a C-shaped section, overdirect the hair forward, elevate it up and slide cut.

Note: Ashlee says the key to elevating your shag game is not just thinking about the overall shape of the cut but the shape of each individual section.

2. Then, for each section behind the fringe, brick lay the C-shaped sections so the hair is longer toward the back. Continue slide cutting. “This creates interlocking bits that swing and hug around the face shape,” shares Ashlee.

3. For the color application, start by applying Formula A to the new growth.

4. Then, feather in Formula B, targeting focus areas like the jawline and nape where there’s some length and disconnection. “The brighter red panels were to create impact and accentuate the areas around her shoulders…Women always pull the hair from their nape around front so it becomes a focus area,” shares Cares. “I also wanted to add panels to grab attention around her beautiful jawline and the layers that fell there.”

5. Apply Formula C from the midlengths to the ends and let everything process for 20 minutes.

6. Rinse, then glaze with Formula D to add some extra vibrancy.

7. Rinse again, then blow-dry and style the hair using a 1¼-inch Hot Tools® Professional 24K Gold Curling Iron.
