Want To Paint Faster Face-Framing Blends? Watch This!
How To Transition Full-Foil Blondes & Balayage Into Low-Maintenance Blends
Fall Mood: Our clients requesting to transition from heavy foils and bright balayage into more low-key looks with depth. But one thing we know for sure—they want to maintain brightness around the hairline! That’s why TIGI® USA Technical Education Director Renée Valerie (@renee.valerie) is sharing how to quickly create face-contouring, illuminated blends with a technique that works on curly or straight hair.

1. How To Section The Face Frame
For this technique, Renée sections the hair out to create a zigzag that works around the front perimeter with the hair’s natural fall. Here’s why: This creates brightness around the front face frame and leaves depth in the back—the zigzag will prevent a strong disconnect between light and darkness to create a diffusion of tones.
Sectioning Breakdown:
1. Start by taking a triangular section that starts between the mid-crown and top of the crown, with two diagonals at the high recession on both sides. Clip this top section away.
2. On each side, take a zigzag parting—diagonal back and diagonal forward—to create diamond-shaped sections on both sides of the head.
3. Divide the top triangle into a smaller triangle and a rectangular section. This will allow you to detail the hairline with more control.
4. Around the hairline, decide if you want to leave a gap for natural depth and diffusion or start directly around the face. This will determine the angle you start each section at.
Pro Tip: Start the application with the side sections and finish with the top. This way, if the sides process more quickly than the top, you can easily keep the top clipped away as you rinse.
2. Weave + Paint Technique
Take diagonal, baby-fine weaves and apply TIGI® Copyright True Light White Lightener with 20-volume developer. The goal: Mirror the hairline and then rotate with the round of the head until you run parallel to the top of the section. Separate each weave with TIGI® Copyright Meche Strips.
The amount of negative space you leave between section will determine how low-maintenance the results will look. Renée leaves ½-inch between each section for a more lived-in look.
3. Adjust The Weave For Clients With Curly Hair
This illumination method is perfect for clients with curls—no need to adjust the sectioning or technique, just the weave! Instead of taking fine baby weaves that would get lost in the curls, take ‘placement’ weaves to show more contrast. The curls will prevent the thicker weaves from looking stripey.
4. Tip For Preventing Bleed Marks
When you’re applying the lightener, Renée recommends never going straight to the scalp. Instead, start away from the scalp and feather toward the top. If the Meche slips during the application, this will prevent any bleed marks or harsh lines.
