1. Do THIS to avoid uneven & hollow hair color
The days of hollow hair color that fades fast are through! As temperatures cool down, we expect some of your blonde clients to say goodbye to their brightness and hello to the dark side. When taking your blonde babes back to brunette, filling the hair is essential to ensure your color won’t fade or appear uneven.
First of all, what is filling? When you lift a client from a Level 4 to a Level 10, you’re removing warm tones (like orange and red) to achieve that perfect pale yellow. So, before applying any brunette color to your client, you need to add those pigments back into the hair.
Filling is the process of repigmenting or replacing pigments that were removed from the hair during the lightening process. An easy way to do this is by using Schwarzkopf Professional® CHROMA ID™ Bonding Color Masks to replace lost pigments while enforcing structural bonds in the hair shaft. Do not skip this step!
Check out this technique in action by Kate McBride (@katemcbridehair):
- First, Kate fills with Schwarzkopf Professional® CHROMA ID™ 7-77. “This packs a punch of pigment!” She says.
- Next, she applies Schwarzkopf Professional® 25g IGORA ROYAL® 4-0 + 20g 4-46 + 45g IGORA ROYAL® Oil Developer 6% (20 Vol.) from the root to midsection.
- Lastly, Kate applies 20g IGORA ROYAL® 4-46 + 20g 6-63 + 40g IGORA ROYAL® Oil Developer 6% (20 Vol.) to the ends.
2. Brassy brunettes? Here’s a pre-toning trick!
Blondes aren’t the only time you have to worry about brass: It can creep up on your brunettes, too! Color masks are used often for fun, vibrant color looks, but they work great for neutral tones as well. Pre-tone with a toning mask to cancel out any unwanted orange or yellow pigments, creating the perfect base for your toner.
Here’s an example from Ashley Gonzales (@ashley.thehairbruja) using CHROMA ID™ 9-12 to pre-tone her client to create the perfect base for a cool high-contrast brunette:
Pro Tip: Using black to tone?! Here’s how it works: @hairbymeganperez adds CHROMA ID™ Off-Black and Blue to 9-12 to tone out unwanted warmth, and leave the hair with that high shine our brunette clients want. After shampooing, towel-dry and process for only 10 minutes. See the finished look below!
