Somehow fall is right around the corner and we are READY for the swarm of redheads to hit our social feeds. We recently scrolled by Ashley Rios’s (@_watchmepaint) bold red balayage and had to find out the details. Scroll down for all you need to know about how to achieve and maintain this technique.

Who is this technique for?

Reds are a bold commitment and this look is no exception. “It is most suitable for the client that doesn’t mind returning to the salon every four weeks to maintain and refresh a bold vivid red. I would not recommend this look to a client that frequently changes their color and style. It is also not ideal for someone who prefers a low-maintenance up keep,” says Ashley.

Reds are typically the most challenging color to maintain and to remove from the hair. “If your client is consistently switching it up, make sure you fully explain what this bold look means for them cost- and time-wise as well as how it will affect future hair goals. The last thing you want to do is give yourself more work in the future as well as an unhappy client that can’t handle the maintenance,” explains Ashley.

How long does this technique take and what is the maintenance?

It varies based on the density and length of each client’s hair, but this process generally takes Ashley about three hours start to finish. The Schwarzkopf Professional Chroma ID Bonding Color Mask lasts about three to four weeks depending on home maintenance and thermal styling. “One of the things I love the most about this look is that these bonding masks really are an all-around win for both stylists and clients! It’s a product the client can take home and use once a week themselves or can be a service at the salon to replace a gloss! But it is very important that the client is using salon professional products at home in between services!” says Ashley.

What is the pricing for this technique?

Prices can vary based off the individual stylist and location. “The average cost for this whole service of a root application, partial highlight, color bonding mask and style costs $275. If this was just a four-week ‘Gloss/ Color Refresh’ appointment the cost would be $65,” explains Ashley

1. Apply Formula A to the roots and let process for 45 minutes.

2. While that processes, apply Formula B in a heavy weave and tease foilayage placement and process until the hair reaches a Level 8.

3. Rinse and shampoo.

Pro Tip: Use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup from the hair and open the cuticle for maximum coverage and absorption.

4. Towel-dry, then section the hair and section hair in to three sections. Apply Formula C from roots to ends and comb through for even distribution and full saturation. Process 5 minutes.

Pro Tip: Be sure to remove as much water as possible as to not dilute the bonding mask.

5. Rinse, then blow-dry and style as desired.
