What is slugging?

Nail slugging is all about layering nourishing, ingredient-rich oils and treatments onto your nails, cuticles and surrounding areas. Then, following up with a thick occlusive layer—like your fave hand cream, or Vaseline and Aquaphor. This final layer locks in the high-quality base to keep your nails living their best slug life.

Why add slugging to your nail care routine?

Between cleansing, sanitizing, picking and manicuring, we use our hands for everything. Nail slugging helps erase the stress our cuticles take on from:

  • Daily wear-and-tear
  • Drier weather
  • Cleansing
  • Damage left by enhancements

Slugging also helps keep nails from becoming dry and brittle and prevents splitting. These split openings along the nail and cuticle can allow bacteria to enter the matrix area (where nails are formed) and cause redness, puffiness and infection.

How do you get your slug on?

Slugging can get a little sticky, so it’s best done at night. You’ll also want to make sure you slug when you won’t be constantly washing or sanitizing your hands.

Here’s everything you need:

  1. Assemble your favorite cuticle oil, serum and hand cream. Make sure to massage the mixture well into the cuticle.
  2. Generously apply a thick occlusive layer—typically a petroleum jelly or something similar—to seal in the treatment. Doing this also promotes better product absorption and prevents transepidermal water loss.
  3. That’s it! Let your nails slug as long as possible, then rinse.

Pro tip: Make sure you use high quality ingredients in your base mixture so that when the jelly locks it in, it’s actually effective.
