How-To: Customize Waves + Styles For Every Hair Texture
Customized Styling Tips For Every Hair Type
If you’re not already customizing your clients’ styling routines, you should be! Not only will you appear more professional, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to increase retail sales and make more money. From color-treated and slightly comprised to thick and frizzy-haired clients, BTC Team Member Shannon Rha (@shannonrha) is breaking down exactly how she customizes styles for every texture. Learn the technique, watch the quickie videos and peep the cocktails below!

The Technique:
1. Prep every blowout by cocktailing the right products to set a strong foundation—keep scrolling to see how Shannon customizes for every hair type! “I cocktail products together to personalize each foundation for my clients,” shares Shannon. “Whether it helps control frizz, detangle or cut down the time of the service.”
2. Blow-dry and style the hair using a Hot Tools 1.25” Curling Iron. Pro Tip: If a short-haired client wants tighter curls or waves, Shannon recommends using an iron with a 1-inch barrel instead.
3. Teach your clients how to style their hair at home. Show them how to hold the iron and have them practice without heat to get comfortable before styling. Then, recommend easy-to-use products with instant results like Alterna Haircare Caviar Anti-Aging Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist.
Show, don’t tell! Teach clients how they can use styling products at home.
Scroll through for three personalized, foundation-building cocktails!
1. Color-Treated Hair
Start their haircare regimen directly after the color service by applying products that strengthen sensitive and porous strands or slightly compromised hair. Try a cocktail of Alterna Haircare Caviar Anti-Aging Omega+ Anti-Frizz Nourishing Oil and Caviar Repair Re-Texturizing Protein Cream to increase manageability and infuse the hair with moisture by filling in gaps and tears in the cuticle.

2. Fine to Medium-Haired Clients
Avoid weighing down fine-haired (and short-haired!) styles by only using small amounts of lightweight products—Shannon swears by Alterna Haircare Caviar Anti-Aging Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist that works as a thermal protectant, tames flyaways and adds major shine for smooth and fuller-looking waves. For medium-haired clients, apply Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Milk to dry hair or as a leave-in conditioner.

3. Thick, Coarse & Frizzy Hair
Shannon recommends using a moderate-to-heavy amount of product on clients with coarse hair knowing they can handle it. Try cocktailing Caviar Anti-Aging Anti-Frizz Blowout Butter and Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Milk to tame the frizz (for up to 72 hours!) before using hot tools. This will improve softness and manageability while adding visible shine and bounce.
