So, You Want To Talk About Hair Thinning?

How To Effectively Help Your Hair Loss Clients In 3 Steps

The four words “I can help you” are transformative enough for a stylist to turn a guest into a client for life. Whether your client is openly talking about their hair loss experience or as a professional you’re noticing their hair is thinning, here’s how to help your client reduce hair loss in three easy steps.

1. The Two Factors That Contribute To Hair Loss

Before you can help your client, you have to understand the types of hair loss and what contribute to them. According to Rene Furterer National Education Manager Chuck Hezekiah, there are two types of hair loss your client could be experiencing, here’s what they are:

  • Progressive Hair Loss: Age-related hair thinning also known as androgenetic alopecia characterized by a progressive and localized decrease of the capillary mass.
  • Reactional Hair Loss: The temporary increase of hair loss in the telogen phase triggered by seasonal changes and hormonal disturbances like childbirth, stress, fatigue, an unbalanced diet, chemotherapy and more.

While progressive hair loss is chronic, reactional is temporary but according to Chuck, you can lose up to 40 percent of your hair in three months as a result of reactional thinning. “With something like stress, what happens is it creates more cortisol in the body,” says Chuck. “And what it does is it takes the normal antigen, catagen, telogen, grow, rest, shed [phases] and forces everything into the telogen and exogen phase, which means it sheds faster and without control.”

However, whether you’re dealing with a progressive or reactional hair loss client, you can still guide them to replenish their hair through proper consultation and product solutions.

2. Hair Loss Consultation Tips To Retain A Client For Life

Hair loss is undeniably a tough conversation for a client to have, but the below questions will let them know you can support their hair regrowth journey before they even ask.

  • What shampoo, conditioner and haircare products are you using?
  • How often do you cleanse your scalp?
  • What are you looking for today?
  • Do you have the same amount of hair you had five years ago?
  • When did you notice a change in your hair density?

3. Here’s How To Slow Hair Thinning

While there are many different factors that could lead to a client’s hair loss, there is one solution that can slow reactional thinning. Rene Furterer’s Triphasic Reactional Serum is a 100 percent drug-free, leave-in formula that addresses the underlying causes of thinning hair. It is formulated with plant-based ingredients and clinically-proven to balance the scalp to promote stronger hair and decrease the hair thinning process. The serum can be used at-home or in-salon.

Here’s how to apply the Triphasic Reactional Serum:

  •  Snap the top of the ampoule off and attach applicator
  • Squeeze tip and apply the entire vial to a clean, damp scalp section by section
  • Massage scalp to encourage product penetration
  • Do not rinse and proceed to styling as usual
  • For best results, apply weekly for three months
