Reverse Balayage: Everything You Need To Know About This Dimensional Technique!

You’ve worked all summer to get your client super-blonde, and then she comes in asking for darker tones. What do you do? Try this reverse balayage technique from BTC Balayage Queen Farhana Premji, aka @xo.farhana.balayage to her 135k Insta followers. Keep reading to see what we mean.

When Should You Use Reverse Balayage?
This technique “is perfect for your guests wanting to depend their grown-out summer balayage without losing all the dimension you worked so hard to achieve,” Farhana said. Reverse balayage is a versatile technique—here are some of the results you can achieve with reverse balayage:
  • Transitioning highlights into a balayage look
  • Toning down contrast
  • Bringing back dimension into hair that has been over-painted
  • Breaking up a solid blonde

What To Know Before You Start Reverse Balayage:

To prep your clients for this service, Farhana shared these consultation tips:

  • Plan and establish the end goal with the client. Make sure they understand what this technique is all about!
  • When choosing colors, create formulas that match their natural color (or slightly lighter).
  • Even if the goal is a neutral/cool result, formulate reverse balayage colors with a bit of warmth to avoid a dull end result.
  • Use a semi or demi permanent color when integrating depth. This way, it is easier to lighten the client again when they’re ready!

Tip: Use A Combination of Highs and Lows To Create Dimension

Farhana spilled a few painting tricks to ensure this service (and the next one) go smoothly.

  • Ensure sections are thin enough for even saturation but thick enough to see the impact.

Tip: Focus Placing Pockets Of Depth Through The Interior And The Crown While Maintaining Brightness Around The Face

“I love placing a lowlight right behind the face frame. It creates separation and makes the lightness around the face pop even more,” Farhana explains.
