Ready To Own? Four Things You Should Know

close formula

You love the creativity and social aspect of hairdressing, and you have dreams, big dreams, of owning your own place soon. But you’re also a smart cookie—you know that starting and running a business, while rewarding, is difficult and can take time away from the hairdressing you love. And to be honest, you may not have a lot of experience as a business person. So maybe, just maybe, a franchise is the way to go! Trent Debth, a TONI&GUY salon owner in Fort Worth, Texas, shared why he and his wife went the franchise route.

Trent Debth and Jana Lloyd opened their salon in 2015, but aren’t new to TONI&GUY. Jana has been with the brand for 17 years, and Trent graduated from a TONI&GUY Academy!

1. Sounds cool, but what’s franchising?
Basically, franchising allows you to open your own salon under an umbrella of an already-existing salon. You’ll get a turnkey solution (think operational models, business systems, education plans and marketing) and help locating and remodeling a salon.

2. Why would I want to do that?
Simple—because it makes it easier to achieve your dream. “I believe we could have opened a salon on our own, as many other people have done,” he said. “But by opening a TONI&GUY salon, we skipped about five years of growing pains that many salons don’t make it through without closing.”

Education is crucial. Here, Trent’s team is in training for reparative and smoothing treatments.

3. What else is so great about franchising?
From Day 1, TONI&GUY franchise owners have help, starting with franchise coaching. For Trent, the help he received in selecting a salon site was just the tip of the iceberg—and it continued through the design process, build-out, soft opening and even into day-to-day operations. “The hands-on approach with people that have real-world experience in each aspect of franchising is what makes this process so great, as well as the support we’ve received from all the other franchisees,” he said. “It’s like a big family banding together to build a barn—each person who has expertise in some area of the business has stepped up to help.”

4. What about education?
You know education is the basis for a strong salon team. TONI&GUY franchise owners have education built right in, said Trent. “The stylist training program forms a solid foundation for success in both new stylists and experienced stylists,” he shared. “It gets everyone speaking the same language and on the same page, which is a huge help in getting a team up and running quickly.”
