FIND THE PERFECT INSPO PIC WITH PINTEREST’S NEW FILTER
Hair inspo pics just got a whole lot easier to find. Gone are the days of scrolling through tons of “summer hairstyles” that don’t represent your specific hair pattern only to leave you frustrated and returning back to the search bar. Enter: Pinterest’s new hair pattern search tool.
What is it?
Pinterest recently released a new hair pattern search tool that allows users to search for photos based on their specific hair pattern. Protective, Straight, Wavy, Curly, Coily, and Bald/Shaved are the new filter options and this first-of-its-kind tool was dreamt up by Pinterest’s Head of Inclusive Product, Annie Ta, who worked with BIPOC creators and pinners on the feature. BTC Fam and Global Artistic Director of Amika Naeemah LaFond was involved in the process advising on the overall user experience as well as the incorporation of inclusive language.
How to use
The simplicity of this new feature makes it so simple to find your dream inspo pic. Just type in your normal search term (i.e. summer hairstyles, short hair styles, etc.) and then select one of the six new hair pattern options. This will further narrow down your search results to apply specifically to your hair texture.
Why it’s important
“The concept of Pinterest’s hair pattern search spoke to me because the absence of it has been something that I and other women, in particular Black and Brown women, have felt othered by for quite some time. Non-Black faces and representation is usually the default on most search engines when it comes to beauty. The new tools that Pinterest has implemented have set a new and more inclusive standard and I’m proud to have played a part in that,” explains Naeemah.
“This new tool will mark a much-needed milestone for racial equity in the world of coding. Just the simple idea that I don’t have to work twice as hard to find a hairstyle because of my hair type is a game-changer,” says Naeemah.
