Dear Clients: These 5 Haircare Habits Are Ruining Your Hair
Myth vs. Reality: How To Fix & Avoid Common Haircare Mistakes
When you educate your clients on at-home haircare, are you skipping crucial information? We spend so much time loading up our appointments with extra add-ons to give their hair some TLC—while in reality, there are a few secret culprits ruining all of our hard work disguised as routine hair habits. Overusing dry shampoo, or using shampoo and oils that weigh hair down…it may be time to debunk some haircare myths and guide your clients to invest in their hair.
Mistake 1: Overusing dry shampoo
Loading up your hair with another layer of dry shampoo three days post-shower is not always the best option. Although it can buy you some time until wash day, this is where major buildup is found which can lead to scalp irritation and flaking. Instead, try a lighter option like a powder—it’s oil-absorbing and a favorite of Cleveland-based color specialist and educator Sally Lemmo (@clevelandhairboss) for the following reasons:

- Adds texture: Sally loves using Hairstory Powder to add texture without weighing down fine hair.
- Extends your styles: “It extends the life of my blowouts tremendously,” Sally shares.
- Talc-free: Powder is talc-free. “Talc has been linked to health issues,” Sally explains. “That right there is my number one reason!”
- Non-aerosol: Aerosol products can cause strain on the lungs, and powder is a less irritating option.
- Works great for updos: “If you do updos, you need this,” Sally says. “The nozzle is so easy to use. No more shaking the hair—you can be precise with your application and apply texture exactly where you need it.

Mistake 2: Not using the right shampoo
Do you struggle with an oily scalp? Shampoo might be the culprit! “Overproduction of oil is caused by aggressive detergents,” Sally explains. Detergents can strip the scalp and hair which causes extreme dehydration and, often, breakage. “When I have a client who is struggling with these problems, I recommend Hairstory’s New Wash,” she shares. Here’s why she loves it:
- No detergents, parabens, sulfates or suds
- Protects color with no non-stripping cleansers
- Extends time between washes
- Helps reduce flakes and scalp irritation
- Fights frizz while adding volume
- Restores natural shine
- As a two-in-one cleansing cream, New Wash only requires one step to knock out shampoo and conditioner
Pro Tip: Use Hairstory’s Massaging Scalp Brush to work the cleanser into the scalp—this will help stimulate blood flow and remove any additional buildup.

Mistake 3: Swapping out shampoo for a cleanser will make styling harder
Just because you swap your traditional shampoo out for a cleanser does not mean your routine will become more difficult—just ask shag expert and co-owner of Edo Salon, Jayne Matthews (@jayne_edosalon). “I spend five minutes styling my shaggy bob [and] I never wash my hair more than once a week. It never gets oily and it used to be super oily after two days when I used normal shampoo,” Jayne shares.
Get her quick styling routine below that Jayne shares with her clients via IG:
1. Apply New Wash Purple Boost Set liberally to the hair and allow it to sit for three minutes. “The purple booster makes my hair stay creamy blonde without getting brassy. I don’t like ash much, but I also don’t like yellow. I’m pretty particular about my blonde color and this seems to work perfect,” Jayne shares.
2. Rinse very thoroughly ensuring all product has been removed.
3. Apply a pump and a half of Hairstory Hair Balm, which Jayne calls “the world’s best styling cream.” Use your hands and a towel to work it into the hair.

4. Jayne has straight, fine hair, so she dries it with a diffuser to add movement. Use your hands to lift the hair at the roots and style the ends.

5. “When I want a bit more volume I use some hair powder at my roots so I can get kind of a fuller French twist,” Jayne adds.

Mistake 4: Using an oil that weighs the hair down
We have all been there before: Our fine-haired clients have tried oils in the past, experienced unwanted weight or “greasiness” and are out for good. That’s when Sally uses (and educates them about) Hairstory Hair Oil which is formulated to penetrate the hair strands, so it actually treats them—instead of just sitting on the top and weighing the hair down.
“Because [the oil] absorbs the eight essential oils, it not only smells incredible but aids in repairing the hair from the inside out,” Sally explains. “It’s essentially treating your hair at the same time as it is controlling frizz and taming flyaways.”

Consider This: The way you cleanse may be another reason your hair feels weighed down—you have to work harder to remove oils! Mexico-based stylist Whitney Murphy (@the.hair.hug) reminds us that, “The oils will just sit on the hair if you aren’t mechanically working it out with your hands and water pressure.” She suggests using hot water, high water pressure and the Massaging Scalp Brush for at least 90 seconds. “Hot water will attract those cleansing essential oils, then you can easily push or squeeze the product out of your hair,” she explains.

To get your clients started, we stole this super easy schedule from Whitney. Screenshot this for later!
- Sunday: Cleanse with New Wash.
- Monday: Apply Powder at roots for a refresh.
- Tuesday: Rinse with water and air-dry. “If you need added moisture and separation, use Hair Balm at the midlengths and ends of your hair,” Whitney explains. Add more Powder at the roots once air-dried for volume.
- Wednesday: Wash with New Wash. Scrunch and air-dry.
- Thursday: Mist the ends of the hair with water, scrunch with Hair Blam and apply powder at roots.
- Friday: Brush out your hair before you get it wet to break up any existing powder and distribute it evenly. Rinse and air-dry.
- Saturday: Brush your hair, mist with water if needed and apply Powder and Hair Balm again.
