Cleansing Curly Hair: How To Properly Remove Buildup

Washing Curly Hair: 4 Things You Must Do as a Hairstylist

Our curly-haired clients expect to be at the shampoo bowl longer: Textured hair tends to compile oil and buildup quicker than other hair types because of the products used for curly or protective styles—which also leads to cleansing less frequently. Here’s how to use that time effectively:

Learn to revive curls and coils with Schwarzkopf Professional® Digital Artistic Team Member Brendnetta Ashley (@edgybgirl). Get her non-negotiable steps for removing buildup and easy detangling below.

Taking Curly Clients Through a Deep Cleanse & Blowout:

About the starting canvas: Brendnetta shares, “Our model today is curly but extremely coarse. She is on the damaged side, she’s been doing a lot of swimming over the summer and her hair has not had the treatment that it needs. She also has some damage on those ends because they haven’t been trimmed in along time as well.”

4 Key Tips to Properly Cleansing Curly Hair

1. Wet the hair thoroughly before applying shampoo: “This is going to allow for the water to open up the cuticle to remove any dirt and it’s going to help soften any tangles,” Brendnetta explains.

2. Shampoo at least twice for proper cleaning: “This will ensure you have a nice clean, healthy scalp and the hair is properly detangled and softened,” Brendnetta shares. Try her go-to: Schwarzkopf Professional®FIBRE CLINIX® Fortify Shampoo.

3. Apply the conditioner to the weakest strands first: “Always keep in mind that the ends and the mids of the hair have been living on the head the longest. They typically are going to be the driest areas of the hair and are going to need the most conditioning treatment to it,” Brendnetta explains.

Pro Tip: She loves to use Schwarzkopf Professional FIBRE CLINIX® Fortify Conditioner mixed with the FIBRE CLINIX® TAME Booster to control frizz and increase manageability.

4. While the conditioner sits, begin to detangle: “The conditioner adds extra slippage so it makes it that much easier to detangle the hair.” Brendnetta works in small subsections with a detangling comb, allowing the conditioner to sit a total of 15 minutes.
