3 Upstyling Tips To Try In The Salon
Try These Tips To Elevate Your Updos
Forget bobby pins! The new way to hold down hair is with a needle and thread. Sounds wild? Well that’s just one of the tips Oribe Global Ambassador James Pecis (@jamespecis) demonstrated to make upstyling easier. Scroll down to get the deets, then watch the full tutorial above!

1. Don’t Use Hairspray
James prefers to use Oribe’s Très Set Structure Spray when styling, because it’s more flexible than hairspray. The spray applies like a mousse and leaves the hair with enough foundation and memory to securely hold styles in place. If your client isn’t feeling the updo, you can easily brush out the hair without starting over.

2. Use A Braid As A Base
Whether you’re doing an updo in the salon or an elaborate editorial style, a simple three-strand braid is all that’s needed to establish a solid base for a gorgeous look. Here’s how James does it:
- First, apply Oribe Swept Up Volume Spray at the roots for added texture.
- Then use your fingers to comb the hair back into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Fingers are used so established texture isn’t removed from the hair.
- Start creating a three-strand brand, keeping tight tension at the base. Braid until you reach the end and secure with an elastic.
- Fold the end of the braid inside until it reaches the nape, then secure in place using bobby pins.
- Cut the ponytail out of the hair and open up the braid a little.
- Use a needle and thread to sew to secure the look.

3. Instead Of Using Bobby Pins, Sew The Hair
James prefers to use a blunt needle and elastic thread instead of bobby pins to secure an updo, because thread is weightless and easier on the hair than classic pins. Plus, it’s easy to do and you don’t have to worry about pins slipping out during your client’s event. Just follow these steps:
- First, thread the needle and knot the elastic string at the end. These items can be purchased at a craft store.
- Start at the top of the head. Place the needle through the hair and loop the thread around the hair to anchor it.
- Next, weave the needle in and out underneath a small section of hair, pull completely through and tighten to hold in place.
- Continue this step moving in a zig-zag pattern around the entire head until finished, then loop the string to secure it and cut the thread.
- Style and manipulate the hair as needed. The elastic thread will hold the hair in place.
