Instagram-Inspired Haircolor + 2 Fashion Color Application Tips

Working to improve your color melts? Here’s the bottom line—it’s all about the starting canvas and the blending technique, and Matrix Global Artist Constance Robbins (@constancerobbins) is breaking it all down below! When we caught sight of her recent Instagram-inspired color melt, we asked Constance to share her formulas and steps PLUS her top tips for working with fashion tones and melted color. Keep scrolling for the inside scoop.

When picking the right fashion colors…

  • Choose a color that will complement your client, not compete with them.
  • To do this, Constance keeps her colors more grounded and muted at the base, then adds brighter, lighter pieces toward the ends.

When prelightening for fashion colors…

  • Use natural underlying pigments in the formulations—the hair doesn’t always need to be lifted to a Level 10 because the underlying pigment can offer more support in the final color.
  • For example, when working with red/oranges, Constance will only lift the hair to a Level 6, 7 or 8. The red/orange on that base will give the color more longevity and keep the hair healthier.

COLOR FORMULAS

  • Formula A:

Matrix Light Master Lightening Powder + 20-volume developer

  • Formula B:

Matrix SOCOLOR Cult Semi-Permanent Royal Purple + Clear

  • Formula C:

SOCOLOR Cult Semi-Permanent Flamenco Fuchsia + a drop of Royal Purple

  • Formula D:

SOCOLOR Cult Semi-Permanent Bubblegum Pink + Lucky Duck Yellow

FORMULA STEPS

1. Prelighten the hair using Formula A.

Pro Tip: When using SOCOLOR Cult, it isn’t always necessary to prelighten the hair first since there are permanent shades that will lift and color in one step. However, when using the semi or demi, the higher the level is lifted to, the more vibrant the end result will be.

2. To create the color melt, apply Formula B at the base, Formula C at the mids and then Formula D onto the ends. Melt and blend all colors together.

Pro Tip: Saturate the hair completely when using fashion tones. For Constance, the easiest way to do that is by feeling the hair. “SOCOLOR Cult spreads incredibly easy and covers effortlessly—I like to start the melt with my brush, then blend using my index and middle finger to perfect the transition areas,” she says.

3. Process for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

4. Apply Biolage Blow-Dry Glotion and blow-dry smooth.
