As one of the winners of the 2008 John Paul Mitchell Systems Photo Shoot Competition, Christophe Chevillard from Switzerland had the chance of a lifetime to bring his entry’s creative idea to life, working with Paul Mitchell Editorial Director/NAHA winner Lucie Doughty and a team consisting of a top editorial photographer, makeup artist, and wardrobe stylist.

To enter the contest, Chevillard had submitted his portfolio entry highlighting his top cuts, color and styles of his career, along with brainstormed inspiration boards for his ideal editorial shoot for the judges’ consideration. At the recent photo shoot, judge and shoot mentor Doughty coached Chevillard through the process of putting together an editorial quality photo shoot based on his inspiration.

“There has been a long period of smooth, flat hair – now I feel we are moving more towards celebrating texture and body,” says Chevillard. “I was very moved by the recent looks on the fashion runway which complement my personal preference for big hair and somewhat disheveled looks. I took simple pinned, updos and gave them new life by changing the hair texture, as well as adding the colorful thread to enhance the shapes.”  As Chevillard’s vision was very couture, it was vital that the wardrobe played into each look. The futuristic texture choices and layering in the clothing were aimed to mirror the strong texture play and movement in the hair.

“I entered the contest to find more confidence in my work,” says Chevillard. “I don’t do too many updos in my salon and since I prefer more runway-specific tousled-couture looks, I thought having the chance with the photo shoot contest to create these looks for editorial would challenge me and thus improve my styling technique.”
