#1: Don’t let extensions fall flat and monotone.

Build custom color blends with shade-matching.

Clients who want fast highlights or lowlights, but don’t want to sit through hours of chemical processes? How about that client who has been mentioning ~going blonde~ for a year but never goes through with it? Shade-matching extensions is an easy way to build a custom blend of highs and lows that work with any starting canvas, plus you can charge 3x more than color services!

Here are a few things to remember:

• When matching the ends, there is typically more than one tone.
• Oftentimes, the midlengths and nape will be darker.
• Build the blend with multiple shades. Priscilla will typically recommend three different shades to match.

#3: Don’t cut extensions with scissors only.

Blend with a razor and finish with thinning shears.

Priscilla never cuts extensions with shears to prevent blunt, choppy lines in Keratin Fusion Bonds and Hand-Tied Tape-Ins. Instead, she uses an Extension Blending Razor to achieve the most natural blend possible, and then finishes with Extension Thinning Shears to taper the ends.

Practice makes perfect! If you’re not a cutting specialist, don’t pass off the haircut to another stylist. Instead, pick up the razor and thinning shears yourself and practice until you feel confident to see your vision through—from installation to the haircut.

#4: Don’t be afraid to introduce clients to extensions.

Educate clients to build loyalty.

“I start off a lot of consultations saying, ‘Extensions have a bad reputation because of bad application.’” The best way to build client loyalty is to make them feel confident that their hair’s integrity is your top priority, and then have the proper education to back it up.

Clients unsure about extensions? Ask them why. Most likely, it’s a concern like damage. This is your opportunity to educate clients and introduce them to services.
