This is where balayage is going—more pronounced ribbons of light that stand out amongst darker pieces, for a high-contrast, dimensional look. Kaitlyn Brown’s (@hairbykaitlynbrown) Instagram is filled with colors like this, so we asked her for the formula for this gorgeous blend. Here’s her how-to.

FORMULA STEPS

1. Begin by painting babylights all over with Formula A, starting at the nape and moving up toward the crown. Section into ½-inch partings, weaving finely.

2. Balayage sections in between each babylight with Formula A, using a teasy highlights technique.

3. Continue these techniques, moving toward the front of the head. In the last section (the front hairline to the crown), use Formula B with 2 to 3 back-to-back babylights, transitioning to ½-inch babylights.

4. Balayage in between each foil with Formula B. Process in open air for 20 minutes, then add heat for 5 minutes.

5. Rinse, shampoo and condition. Comb out smooth, and apply Formula C all over, processing for 5 to 7 minutes.

6. Quickly apply Formula D as a root touchup, ½-inch from the root, covering all previously-lightened roots. Process for 3 minutes.  Wash and style as desired.
