You Just Over-Toned Your Blonde Client, Now What?
How To Formulate Cool Blondes Without Muddy, Dull End Results Accidental over-toning: It happens to the best of us, but oftentimes stylists want to correct their formulas when in reality, the issue lies in the porosity of the hair. We are here to help: Scroll on to learn how to avoid over-toning, three quick fixes for an over-toned blondeโplus, cool-toned formulas to save for later. 1. Try A Root Smudge On Top Of A Mask We all know how porous blonde hair can be, so it’s important to “fill in” those porous areas so the color does not overfill the cuticle during processing. โYou have to take into consideration the porosity of the hair,โ explains Michigan-based color specialist Lisa Tucker (@rootedwithlisa). โThe key is to even the porosity of the hair before you apply a toner,โ she adds. Hereโs how she preps the hair to avoid over-toning: After lightener is rinsed, towel-dry the hair and apply a treatment to even out porosity. โI typically grab the Schwarzkopf Professionalยฎ BLONDMEยฎ Masks,โ Lisa recommends.ย Next, apply your root smudge/tap DIRECTLY on top of the mask, followed by a gloss on the ends. Once your toner is finished processing, shampoo and condition as normal. Add 50 percent more shine with IGORA VIBRANCEยฎโclick here to shop! Lisa’s Favorite Formulas: “A few of my favorite balancing toner formulas are both from Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA VIBRANCEยฎ,” Lisa explains. Screenshot them for later!ย Formula A (gloss): 1oz 9-12 + 1.5oz 9-0 + splash of 9-55 Formula B (root smudge): 10g 9-12 + 2g 6-23 + 9-0 2. So, Youโve Over-Toned: 3 Ways To Fix This Mistake If you find your blonde toner has grabbed too dark, try these three tricks from Schwarzkopf Professional Digital Artistic Team Member and BTC Team Member Carly Zanoni (@the.blonde.chronicles) to correct this mistake: Wet Balayage: Try a wet balayage technique to brighten mids and ends: โI use Schwarzkopf Professionalย BLONDMEยฎ Clay Lightener + 10 to 20-volume developer for about 15 minutes,” Carly explains. โThis is my favorite for when the ends of your blonde get too muddy,โ she adds. Bleach Wash: This option is ideal for all-over blondes that are a bit over-toned: โI mix powder lightener, developer and shampoo and apply to damp hair. I watch it and rinse after about five to 15 minutes.โ Clear Permanent Color: โEven though itโs clear, this formula is still alkaline and has the ability to lift and lighten the hair,โ Carly explains. Her favorite method is mixing Clear Permanent Color with 10-volume developer and apply it to overtoned blondes for a slight shift in brightness. PSAโWhen NOT to use these correction techniques:ย โKeep in mind, if there is darker, natural dimension mixed in with the blonde, the lightener from the wet balayage and the bleach wash will lift that as well as the blonde, which could end up orangey. Same goes for the permanent color clear,โ Carly warns. Formulas Photo Credit: Instagram via @the.blonde.chronicles ย 3. Correcting Bands & Brass Without Dulling Colorย Cool tones arenโt just for neutralization: โThey can also be used to control the amount of warmth that you want to see,โ Lisa says. Instead of the classic technique of using violet-based toner to neutralize unwanted warmth, strategically control warmth with purposeful formulation. Lisaโs guest came in with bands of warmth throughout her hair and ends that were a little too warm: Their goal was to add depth, brighten and cool down prelightened pieces and control overall warmth. Keep scrolling to get her application steps and formulas! Step 1: Apply Formula A as a root melt; once finished, drag the product down into a lowlight where depth is needed. P.S.! Step 2: Next, apply Formula B to brighten dark areas. Step 3: Rinse and apply Formula C to cool down the look.ย Step 4: Cleanse and style as desired. How To Formulate For Controlled Warmth Do you have a client that typically requests a warm tone, but you keep wanting to cool things down? This is your sign to trust your gut and instead of eliminating warmth, control it: โMy client typically wears very warm brown and blonde shades, and I convinced her to try some tones on the cooler side. She was a [little] nervous, I had to reassure her a few times,โ Detroit-based colorist Jasmere Waller (@jasblack) explained, adding that: โIt came out fire.”ย Check out the before and after below: Formulas Move your cursor across the image to reveal the transformation Save Jasmine’s formulas for controlled warmth for later:ย Formula A (lightener): Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDMEยฎ Lightener + 7-volume developerย Formula B (roots): Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA ROYALยฎ Permanent Color Cools 6-23 + 30-volume developerย ย Formula C (glaze): IGORA VIBRANCEยฎ Cools 6-23 + 9-21 + Clear For color that lasts up to 25 washes, try IGORA VIBRANCEยฎ! Bonus: Help Clients Understand The Difference Between Warm & Cool Not all clients are familiar with tonality or color theory, and itโs our job to help them feel at ease so they know what to expect their end result to look like. โYou have to make it relatable,โ explains Lisa. If your client requests an โashโ blonde, will they be happy to see ashy, more muted silver tones when they really wanted a brighter, reflective blonde that features some warmth? Thatโs why itโs key to break down the difference! Try using this trick from Lisa to make understanding color theory less intimidating for clients:ย For warm tones: โI compare how the sunset reflects on the water. How it creates a beautiful show of different tones. Warm tones reflect light and make the hair appear shiny,โ Lisa explains. For cool tones: โAshy tones tend to absorb light which could in fact make a hair color appear darker and more muted. They have silver-grey hues with undertones of blue and violet,โ Lisa adds. TemporaryLarisa Love's 4 Tips For Creating Contrast With Semi-Permanent Color
4 Tips To Create Contrast From Larisa Love Colorists usually run to demi- and permanent color for major transformations, but don’t sleep on direct dyesโespecially for your clients who switch up their color often. Joico Global Brand Ambassador Larisa Love (@larisadoll) shows us how she creates stunning Insta-worthy looks using lightener and semi-permanent color. Scroll down to grab her color placement tips, plus check out the finished look and grab the formulas. Don’t forget to watch the full 50-minute tutorial above for all of Larisa’s tips! CLICK HERE to purchase Joico Color Intensity from CosmoProf! 1. Pre-Tone The Hair Larisa prefers to pre-tone the hair using Joico Blonde Life Quick Tone Liqui-Crรจme Toner to neutralize color for an even canvas. Pre-toning also helps ensure the client has a nice fade out. Check Out The Before & After! Formulas Move your cursor across the image to reveal the transformation 2. Elongate The Money Piece Not every client has a lot of hair at the front of the face for a traditional money piece, so Larisa prefers to foil around the perimeter to the back of the head to ensure brightness no matter the hair length. Here’s how she does it: First, take a diagonal back section about an inch thick at the crown. Continue parting behind the ear to the nape, then clip the rest of the hair away. Weave a babylight at the hairline and place a foil tight to the hairline. Apply Joico Blonde Life lightener, making sure to go against the grain at the roots to prevent lines of demarcation and secure the foil. Next, take a slice right behind the babylight and tease once. Apply lightener under the teased hair and secure. Continue this step around the head, adding slices and increasing the tease as you move farther back. Pro Tip: If you have difficulty teasing the hair, you might not be using the right tail comb. Use a comb with the closer teeth for fine or hard to tease hair, and use a more spaced out comb for thicker hair. 3. Apply Color From The Bottom Up When blending Joico Color Intensity shades between the roots and the midlengths, sometimes the the root shade is dragged down lower than expected during the blend. To avoid that, apply haircolor to the midlengths and ends first, then place the root color over the top to ensure it stays in place. Tap The Beaker For The Formulas! Formulas Formula AJoico Blonde Life + 10 Volume LumiShine Developer working up to 20 Volume Formula B (Toner)Joico Color Intensity ยฝ Hot Kiss + ยฝ Passion Berry Formula C (Front Toner)Color Intensity Mauve Amor + Soft Pink + Yellow 4. Over Blend To Ensure Even Saturation Color Intensity is usually applied to dry hair, so it’s essential that section sizes aren’t too thick to ensure even saturation, and aren’t too thin so the application won’t take hours. Here’s how Larisa makes sure her sections are fully saturated: First, apply the color to the section and comb through. Then go back and squeeze the hair to further spread the color. Reapply color to the section if necessary, following the same steps to blend. Continue following this pattern until the entire head is finished. Let Color Intensity process for 20 minutes and rinse. Biolage ColorBalm Conditioner: 4 Tips To Make Haircolor Last
How To Extend Color With Biolageโs New Color-Depositing Conditioner Collection Picture this: You get to the shampoo bowl and want to give your clientโs color an extra POP. Whether itโs cooling down prelightened hair or enhancing a red, Biolage just launched ColorBalm Conditioners to get the job done in less than 10 minutes. We spoke with celebrity colorist Sunnie Brook (@sunniebrook) to get all the deets below! 1. What Is ColorBalm Conditioner? The Biolage ColorBalm line includes six color-depositing shades, plus a Clear shade that can be mixed with any color to customize. These conditioners allow clients to refresh, enhance and extend their color at homeโand they can experiment with non-committal shades! Plus, their hair will be 10x more conditioned after the first use, says Sunnie. The ColorBalm Line includes shades: Red Poppy Saffron Red Chai Tea Cinnamon Earl Grey Lavender Clear 2. Formulation Tips For Different Starting Levels Hereโs Sunnieโs fast go-to breakdown to customize formulas for different starting canvases: Light blonde, medium blonde and light brown. Starting Canvas: Light Blonde Super light blondes typically have a little extra warmth with from back-to-back chemical processes. Here are a few ways to keep the color cool! Chai Tea: Champagne undertones, provides natural iridescence for light blonde bases Earl Grey: Iridescent blue/silver undertones, provides light silver tone for light basesโ Lavender: Gives highlighted ends a pop and provides violet tones for light bases Check out how Sunnie uses Chai Tea to enhance her highlights! ย ย ย ย ย View this post on Instagram ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย A post shared by Hair|Beauty|Design (@sunniebrook) Starting Canvas: Medium Blonde For blonde clients who have recently gone darker, itโs common for the color to fade more quickly. Here are some of Sunnieโs go-to recs! Cinnamon: Enhances natural warm brunette tones Saffron Red: Will have more depth on darker tones Starting Canvas: Light Brown Sunnie loves to use the more pigmented colors on light brown starting levels for richer, more saturated color. Remember, porosity determines longevity, says Sunnie. Red is the largest molecule, so the hair will grab it more quickly and soak it up for longer-lasting color. Cinnamon: Enhances natural warm brunette tones Red Poppy: Adds cool red luster to medium to dark brown or red basesโ Pro Tip: Add Clear to customize a range of lighter tones and pastels. Before & After Using Saffron Red! 3. For Clients: How To Apply ColorBalm At Home Brush out the hair with a paddle brush. Wash with Matrix ColorLast Shampoo. Towel-dry the hair. This is KEY to getting out extra moisture that could dilute the color. Do a strand test with the lightest piece of hair first. Section the hair into two with clips. Use gloves, especially with more pigmented colors like Red Poppy or Cinnamon. Apply the colors to your palm and rub through the hair. Process for 5 to 10 minutes. Comb through the color. Pro Tip To Replicate Color Formulas Clients should use their hands like a palette. That way, they can replicate the color mixtures more easily. For example, explain like this: Apply three lines across of Clear and one dot of Lavender.ย 4. Hereโs A Retail Idea For Color Clients Your clients are always asking for the products you use on their hair in the salon. Instead of creating custom color-depositing conditioner bottles, send them home with a ColorBalm Conditioner and instructions for upkeep, especially if they should mix Clear with their color.
