Ulta Beauty and Black Beauty Roster Launch New All Textures Certification

A new certification program designed to strengthen hairstylists’ skills across all hair textures is coming to the industry. Ulta Beauty and Black Beauty Roster (BBR) have partnered to launch All Textures Certification (ATC)™, a standardized credential that combines written and hands-on assessments for working with straight, wavy, curly and coily hair.

The certification will make its public debut at the BBR Beauty Show on July 27 in New York City, while select Salon at Ulta Beauty educators will be the first to complete the program during its initial rollout.

What Is All Textures Certification?

“ATC is designed to establish a clear, professional standard for hairstylists who work across all hair textures—from straight to coily,” says Black Beauty Roster Founder Maude Okrah Hunter (@maudeyoaks).

The certification includes two components:

Part 1: Written Knowledge Exam

Stylists complete an online exam covering:

• Hair texture knowledge
• Product selection
• Tool usage
• Styling principles

Participants must earn a score of 80 percent or higher to advance to the practical assessment.

Part 2: Practical Assessment

The hands-on evaluation requires stylists to complete three to four styles on mannequins representing multiple hair textures. Qualified educators and hairstylists conduct the assessments in person, with a remote evaluation option planned for the future.

Ulta Beauty Will Be the First To Launch the Certification

The Salon at Ulta Beauty will be the first organization to launch the certification. Select Services District Educators in Ulta Beauty’s Northeast region will be the first group to complete the training before the program expands more broadly.

“Our mission at Ulta Beauty is to continue to honor inclusive beauty services behind the chair,” says Dani Darmanin (@dani.darmanin), Ulta Beauty Director of Category, Brand and Services Education. “We are looking for ways to improve always and to upskill our service providers in relevant, impactful and meaningful education that welcomes all guests.”

Dani says Ulta Academy has partnered with Black Beauty Roster in recent years and recently worked with the organization to update its three-day Textured Immersion education program.

“As soon as we heard BBR was launching this program, we wanted to take the lead in supporting it,” she says. “We were looking to partner with an organization that was brand agnostic and had [a] clear connection to the needs of the guest and salon pro. Now we’re excited to help our industry take this next step forward together.”

When Will All Textures Certification Be Available?

The certification will initially be available to select Salon at Ulta Beauty Services District Educators in the Northeast. Black Beauty Roster plans to expand the program in 2027, making it available to more hairstylists across the industry.
