Bombshell Blowouts: 4 Ways To Create Lift With Longevity
How To Create A Lasting Blowout: Proper Setting Techniques & Product Application
It’s sculpted, sexy and contouring: This is not your grandmother’s blowout! Maria Nila Ambassador Ruslan Nureev (@hairbyruslan) is known for his ability to create the most elegant bombshell blowouts for his clients. Since he works behind the scenes at Fashion Week and on the hottest celebrities and supermodels (aka Megan Fox and Elsa Hosk), we had to chat.
Below, get Ruslan’s pro tips for creating lift, tricks for lasting styles with hold and products he never goes without—keep on scrolling because we’re spilling all the deets below.
1. Always Start With Clean, Wet Hair
To Ruslan, a clean canvas is key to creating the foundation needed for his coveted blowouts. “I always start from scratch,” Ruslan explains. “Sometimes girls come and they think, ‘Oh, you’re just gonna blow it out.’ No. You have to wet it down or wash their hair to start from scratch,” he adds.
2. How To Get The “Sculpt” To Stay All Day
For this look, more is more—a heavy application of products will lead to longevity. “I use a lot of products,” Ruslan shares, “and a generous amount of it.” Get his must-haves below!
- Maria Nila Styling Mousse: This will be the base of your style. “I like to apply it [on wet hair] from roots to tips, so the distribution is even throughout the hair,” Ruslan explains.
- Maria Nila Salty Mist: “I apply this on the roots, mainly in the crown area.”

3. The Blowout: How To “Test” If There’s Enough Product
After you prep the hair, start blowing it dry until it’s about 80 percent dry. Then, check the hair to see if there’s enough product. “I want to feel and see if it has enough product and hold,” Ruslan explains. Here, we’re looking for body and shape as we continue to dry—if the hair falls flat, grab your spray!
“I spray a little more of the Salty Mist and I repeat that until the hair is 100 percent dry. I can repeat this process two or three times, sometimes. It’s all about the product and about how much hold you have,” Ruslan adds.

4. How To Finish The Style With Proper Setting Techniques
To set this style, we’ll be reaching for our curling iron to create the sculpted, contoured effect that defines this look. Get his step-by-step below to learn how he sets model Bregje Heinen‘s glamorous blowout:
1. After the hair is dry, Ruslan uses a classic curling iron technique with a ¼-inch iron, curling in sections and pinning them with ¼-inch velcro rollers to cool. They key to this look is to set the rollers away from the face in the Mohawk—then, on the partline, the rollers will lift the sides (as seen below) allowing the hair to cascade down the ears to define the face-frame.
2. Once you’re finished curling and setting the hair, begin releasing the rollers working from the nape upward. If needed, curl additional pieces near the crown for extra lift and set with creaseless clips.
3. Apply Maria Nila Styling Spray to the roots and tease as needed around the partline to create volume. “I brush out everything with the client’s head facing upward and apply Maria Nila Volume Spray very generously,” Ruslan explains.
4. “Once the client sits upright, I push all the hair forward with the part. That’s how the look is created,” Ruslan concludes. Click here to watch his full tutorial!

Why Maria Nila? “They stand by their vegan word which I’m really happy about because I’m vegan, as well. The quality is really amazing and they’re our No.1 brand in Sweden. I’m hoping they get more recognition in America,” Ruslan shares.
