A brunette-to-blonde transformation is no small request. When that client is a co-host of The Met Gala “Vogue” livestream, the pressure is on. Celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz (@jacobschwartzhair) took SNL star Chloe Fineman from dark to a bright, golden blonde blonde for fashion’s biggest night out—thanks to multiple processes, foils, paint and a lot of Redken Shades EQ. Get all of the details below!

What was the consultation like for this transformation?

“So Chloe went brown for a movie ‘Megalopolis’ and it was so chic on her but we knew she eventually wanted to go back blonde,” said Jacob. “We decided on more of a golden tone of blonde and still keeping it rooty and a natural vibe.”

“We wanted an effortless, classic vibe for the hair [for the Met] and her stylist Yael [Quint] had this amazing custom pink dress made and we felt like the blonde would work better with the overall look,” Jacob explained. “Sometimes it’s hard to put it into words, but blonde and pink together just work!”

How many sessions did this transformation take?

“For a big change, I like to make sure I have that client for the whole day,” Jacob explains. “Don’t try [to] stack and juggle a bunch of clients. Every hair is important and you need to take your time.”

  • First round: Highlights
  • Second round: Highlights and lowlights

“I told her that it was going to take all day and not to judge the in-between process,” Jacob explained. “I like to break it down like this to see what we can get out of her hair first, before we try overwhelming with too many things going on at once. After we got a lot of the dark out, I then went and picked up all of the faded reddish brown in-between the second time with lowlights.”

What does maintenance look like for this type of service?

“The maintenance on her blonde hair is about every 10 weeks,” says Jacob. “I gloss her with Redken Shades EQ at the root of the highlights, so it grows out nicely and buys her time. I [also] love a good water filter to keep the minerals from dulling the blonde and the [Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate] line from Redken—the shampoo and conditioner is so hydrating after a big color change.”
