Meet TikTok’s Favorite Haircut: The Wolf Cut

The return of pop punk music, DIY hair and angsty nostalgia—what’s next for beauty trends? It smells a lot like teen spirit. TikTok’s latest viral haircut is a nod to the early 2000s teenage emo punk with some Ziggy Stardust elements. The wolf cut takes both of the year’s top trends, the mullet and the shag, and fuses them into one.

The best way to describe the wolf cut is to take the foundation of a shag haircut and *add a little mullet-y spice!* This means: A LOT of choppy, wispy layers framing the face like a shag, and a haircut that’s shorter in the front and longer in the back like a mullet.

The haircut itself is androgynous, effortlessly cool and can be worn by a variety of different clients to express their individuality. The haircut originates in South Korea, and K-Pop stars like Beomgyu from TXT (Tomorrow X Together) have made the already popular disconnected shaggy layers go even more viral.

If clients ask for the wolf cut, here are a few things to keep in mind so you can cut and style with confidence.

  • Heavy fringe and ultra-layered face frame
  • Disconnection for a mullet effect
  • Create heavy volume throughout the crown area
  • Pair with loose perms and waves, or wear straight and punky.

To understand the wolf cut, you must understand the main difference between a shag + mullet:

“The mullet is disconnected completely from the ear to the back, whereas the shag is connected to the back. One of the main differences between a shag and a mullet is the amount of hair that is left or removed on the top of the head and around the face,” says Rachel Williams (@rachelwstylist). A mullet is essentially two different haircuts.
